The drive in the pic isn't the drive in the article.

1.8" drives are not uncommon. That's what's used in HDD based MP3 players (iPod, Sandisk, etc.)

The drive on the finger is a .85" drive. To my knowledge, .85" drives don't have capacities greater than 4GB.

And to think, way back when, it was more of a "Woah 10mb, I don't think I'll ever need to buy another hard drive."

That'll teach me to read things through properly.....:o
Whatever its size, it's still tiddly, and unknown to me.
A bit wiser now :D

There was a Seagate demo trailer at a Fry's last week. It had one of those small drives there, although I dont think it is .85" but definitely under 2". But it was still pretty cool. It also had all the drives Seagate used to make from big to small. I cant rememeber how much the first older generation can hold (somewhere along 10mb) but that thing is HUGE! You could break down a door with that..lol :)

Actually Sandisk players use NAND flash memory exclusively rather than magnetic HDDs. Regular iPods and the Zune use 1.8" HDDs though.

Ah... You are correct, sir.

I had incorrectly assumed that with Sandisk's aquisition of Perception Digital that Sandisk would adopt some of PD's many HDD based players. Apparently, that is not the case.

I could have said, "iPod, Perception Digital, etc." but nobody really knows who PD is. :)

You're right, I don't know who PD is :) But Sandisk makes NAND flash memory, which is one of the reasons why they're sticking with it, and why they're able to price their Sansas lower.

Actually, Sandisk doesn't make flash memory. ;)

MSystems makes flash memory and Perception Digital made their MP3 players. Which is why Sandisk bought their companies. Cut out the middle man. I hope that doesn't mean the HDD based players don't disappear. PD had a great alternative to iPod. :(

Oh, I kinda thought Sandisk made their own NAND flash before buying over MSystems...anyway I have a Sansa E280 and it's pretty neat.

Yeah... you'll find most companies don't make their own memory, especially flash.

Even SDRAM isn't often built in house. I mean, a lot of it is like Corsair, Kingston and PDP/Patriot, but even then they're buying chips from the likes of Micron or Samsung and PCB's from compaines like BrainPower and putting the two together.

I wonder how many of those could be fitted to CM Stacker when 50 2.5" HDs fits well:
