Hi everyone,

I'm new to building pc's but one thing I do not want to overlook is the importence of a decent psu. The problem is Im having difficulty chosing one

Basic Spec

Core i7-920 D0 Step (stock speed)
Asus P6T Deluxe V2
BFG GTX 270 OC
WD 1Tb Green
Sony/nec DVD RW

So from what ive read 600w is going to be more than enough to power that lot. The other issue is i need to purchase it from scan.co.uk because I intend to use their finance credit scheme.

Some Psu's I'm considering,

Corsair Hx620
Corsair Tx750
Be Queit Be Dark Power PRO 650w
Enermax MOD82+ 625w

With the hx620 is 18A on the 12v rails, enough to power new GTX cards? I think it said somewhere on nvidia it stated 20A

Tx650 isnt in stock at scan, the tx750 apparently is noisy above 500w and is too much power really for whats going in.

The other two only have 3yr warranty's.

Finaly last question lol, whats efficiency like in the UK at 240v on psu's?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the rant.

Any reccomendations much appreciated

The HX620 is a single 50A rail no matter what the badge or specs say.

Efficiency will be better at 230V (EU standard is 230V) than it is at 120V like in the US.

Maybe a TX850. Yes, I know it's far more power than you need (I feel the same way, having just got a Galaxy 1kw), but then you will never have to worry about your PSU, it has a 5 year warranty, and yes, it is based off of the PSH platform, so it's a bit noisy, but really only at higher loads, and you computer won't draw those higher loads off of it. Plus, Corsair has had CWT change some stuff to make it better than the average PSH 850.

Thanks for clearing up my question with the hx620 :) i just checked wiki and 240v in UK is irrelavent it still complies to EU 230v, just our plugs are diff lol.
I was considering the TX850, i was just worried that it would be ineffcient at low loads.

I would recoment a HX620, but also another hard drive, maybe a WD black.
WD Green have lower power consumption and are quieter and run cooler, but at the cost of transfer rates. It's good for a HTPC, but you appear to be building a gaming rig.

ok cheers, yeah my build is pretty much a basic gaming build. I think I will get a WD Caviar Black. I still can't make my mind up on what psu, the hx620 is highly rated but how futureproof is it?

Meaning what? If you plan to go SLi down the road?

New connectors down the road (no one knows about that)

Yeah sorry good point, I dont plan to run SLI down the road.

The only things I plan to add 6month down the line, maybe a couple more drives and a decent soundcard wich is not going to consume alot more power.

At £99 do you think the Hx620 is still great value? I think it's gone up in price £20+ in the time its been out.

Well looking at scan.co.uk, that is rather steep

All of these are decent alternatives for less money.

Thanks thats great, much appreciated :)

Sorry for hammering this thread today, I left it last minute to ask questions I'd planned to place an order tomorrow. Then I realised I wasnt sure on the psu I'd got listed, wich i should have checked a week back.

Cheers

Update - I found a local retailer, one in distance in case its DOA and ordered an Antec True Power New 750 Blue PSU, The new truepower series looks fairly promising and matches corsiar's 5yr warranty. 750w is more than Im ever going to use but at £107 seemed like good value. I felt the Hx620 was a little overpriced and has gone up in price in two years rather than remained the same or decreased.

for £8 more I would say the Truepower New 750W is a much better deal than the HX620
