im looking to put a PSU into a silent as possible PC and saw the Silerstone Nightjar PSU rated at 300W. is this enough juice to run a dual core duo [and eventually quad] processor, a 7600gs series graphics card, a plethora of PCI dsp cards [2x pci and 2x pcie] with 3 hard drives and 2 optical drives....

any thoughts about these PSU's?

this is NOT for a gaming machine but an audio workstation. it wont run SLI/Crossfire ever.

i guess in addition, i have read when using fanless PSU's you have to pick up thermal disappation elsewhere since the PSU isnt helping case circulation. most cases are closed designs, but we are designing a custom rackmount case and was wondering if a fully fanless design with say a perforated [mesh] top cover would be enough for heat evacuation, with maybe a silent 120mm fan like the enermax enlobal assisting would work in successful cooling of components.

See if you can snag one of those XG Magnum units. I have the "600W" external unit (actually a 500W) and it ran two 7800GTX's no problem (w/ X2 4000+ and two HDD's.) Of course, there's also that article where the guy ran a pair of 8800's with a 500W internal unit. They're really work horses. I'm not using mine anymore, but I have no plans to get rid of it either. :D

The newer Antec 500W Phantom may be worth looking into, they have up-rated some of the build componets. It uses a low flow 80mm fan and is a VERY quiet unit.

It might be able to handle that, non-overclocked. The Nightjar is one of only two fanless units I like, the other is the FSP Zen. Etasis makes a 560W semi fanless unit (big brother to the Nightjar), but so far I haven't seen it for sale in North America.

Edit - everyone responded while I was typing :D

The XG unit would be good choices as well. Not sure about the Phantoms - some of the caps in them are Panasonic, but there are still quite a few Fuhjyyu last time I saw one.

is this the one you are referring to?

or this one:

i guess you said it was the EX so second link. i wish they did a better job with a single [wrapped] cable with a better connector from the external PSU to the case plate. like those military type connectors a la hiper used but with a LOT more pins.

yeah, it wouldnt be overclocked at all... is this really feasible to look into or would i be wasting my time trying to achieve silence only to lose out to having to add case fans in the end anyway?

You might have a look at Seasonic as well for quiet fanned units ;)
