Back in late summer, I had bought a set of Boston Acoustic BA7900 (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,1126462,00.asp) speakers locally for $50. Amazing speakers, beautiful sound. Unfortunately, the lightning strike my house took on October 11th took them out.

I was just browsing fleabay and saw a deal I couldn't pass up (http://cgi.ebay.com/Boston-Acoustics-BA7900-Computer-Speakers-Set-Subwoofer_W0QQitemZ270370747629QQihZ017QQcategoryZ 3702QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem); so I ordered them. $62.95 with shipping.

Here's hoping they come quickly.

nice find, even considering the ridiculous shipping charges.

still can't match the $30 I paid for my Bose Cinemate system. :D

The sub alone weighs in at 26 lbs, the 4 satellites weigh 2 lbs each, and the center weighs 2.5 lbs. The control pod weighed about 1-1.5 lbs, too. Plus, the sub is rather large, about 1 ft cubed, and the satellites are all pretty big (7.5" x 5.25" x 4.5"), with the center being similarly sized. It's a big set, almost 40 lbs, so I don't think $24 for shipping is all that bad.

I shudder at how big the box is going to be, though. My old set didn't have a box, got them from a guy who's wife made him sell them because the speakers were "too big" (although I think she only meant the subwoofer).

Can't be too much worse than my Edifier R501's. That sounds about the same size for the sub and satellites. That box was huge. And now I have two of those boxes because the amp in the first set started flaking out, cutting out at random times on random channels.

Edifier briefly made me happy by sending out another set and not asking for the first back, but the happiness lasted only about as long as it took for the second one to start cutting out as well. So now I have two sets of defective R501's. That's ok though... going to upgrade the home theater soon, and that means I'll have a 6 channel input Kenwood receiver to use with at least one set. And the new set doesn't cut out as often as the older one does, so that helps. The old set's been banished to the office where it isn't used much.

The Edifiers do sound nice though. It's just too bad the amp design sucks.

Got my tracking number, which is probably a print-at-home one, since it isn't on UPS's site yet, but I'm (kind of) patient.

I like my 'ole Logitech Z-3's, especially since I ported the subwoofer to make it move some air, but I really missed the 345 watts of Boston Acoustic goodness.

Total shipping weight (just got onto UPS's site): 46 lbs. Better make plans to be home when it gets here, a box that big on the porch, in my neighborhood, not a very good idea to leave it there.

Sounds like a plan.

I've got my main rig Edifiers on a line conditioner - that seems to help reduce the cutting out some. If I cared and they cost more, I'd probably get in there and try to figure out where they screwed up in the design.

Where do you get a good line conditioner? I just got a nice pair of Polk studio monitors and a JBL 200w sub (BIG step up from my 15w logitec system,) its really annoying when you can tell when somebody flips a light switch on the other side of the house.

Mine came from MCM Electronics.

On that note, can you hook a surge suppressor up to a line conditioner that also has (albeit lower) surge suppressing? I can get this conditioner (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=204860746&listingid=39510940&dcaid=17902) locally for $10, and I'm thinking it's better than nothing, but it only has two outlets. Could I hook the surge suppressor my computer is on to it?

I know, I need to get a UPS, but for right now, I'm working with what I can afford.

If you can't, somebody better come stop me from doing it ;)

Go right ahead.

Do some ups's do line conditioning?

I won a 350VA APC backup battery at a local lan party, might as well put it to use as I have it to keep a laptop charged and the dsl going for when the power goes out.

Picked up that RCA conditioner today, I need to move a dresser to get it onto the outlet, so I'll hold off until Friday, when the speakers come.

The speakers just got here, and I don't think they are refurb, they have all of the original packing material and there isn't a scratch that I can see on them. I don't have time to set them up right now, should be able to tonight, though.

As an addendum to my last post, I am convinced they are brand new. There is no sign of any wear whatsoever on them; including the RCA connections for the speakers to the amp, and on the 1/8" phono plugs to the sound card.
