View Full Version : Why is it so Hard to find good PSU reviews?

I have to compliment Jonny on a great site here and its too bad that more of his time can't be dedicated to writing reviews. I say this because I have found it very hard to find power supply reviews that include ripple measurements. So far the only sites that I have found that measure ripple is Jonnyguru, Xbitlabs and TechPowerup.

Why is it that so many sites only measure voltage drops/spikes across the rails? I understand that all they need is a multimeter but only measuring voltages and then declaring the PSU being reviewed as an "Editor's Choice" or whatnot seems to be a bit far fetched. Its like reviewing a graphics card by only measuring temperatures and fan speed before declaring it the fastest graphics card ever.

I wish there were more reviews on this site and I can't wait for more to be posted. But, until that happens can anyone tell me which sites out there review power supplies the way they are MEANT to be reviewed (other than Jonnyguru of course).

SPCR (http://www.silentpcreview.com/section10.html)? At last they measure ripple too. ;)

Agreed. But too bad they only started doing that recently.

Lee Garbutt at PC Perspective has been ripple measuring too since I've known about him.

I'm asking this because I am keeping a running list of all the complete (ie: voltage, ripple etc.) reviews right here:

I'm glad someone has patience for the NCIX forum system ;)

Quite a few of us do. :D

As for the PCPerspective reviews, I can't figure out for the life of me what the difference is between the regular and detailed reviews are....

Also, I noticed in the Cooler Master iGreen Power review that he only put a 263W load on the PSU (which is a 600W unit) to determine ripple. Isn't that a little low for a 600W unit?

For quite some time, Lee had a homemade load tester that couldn't do more than 300W or so - he upgraded recently.

Ah, so in his newer reviews we should see more loads being applied to the rails then. Thats good. Now if only he would tell us who the actual manufacturer of the power supplies is....

Many of the links showing power supply reviews point to completely inadequate reviews. Such as this tidbit from Hardware Secrets:

Unfortunately we don’t have the necessary equipment to make a true power supply review;

Oy!!!!

Nice!!!

Now if only the review sites would give us a zoomed-in view of the Underwriters Label....

We will recive the last version of the DBS-2100 PSU Tester within 1 month. Hope that will help on make better reviews... now the load is the max that the PC user can draw... not 100% (and others), and efficiency is aproximated, not the real one. However we publish in spanish only by now, so ... :P
