Hey Everyone,
Its my first time building a pc, so I'm out here for some advice on psu's and such.

Well here's the parts list:

Intel Core 2 Duo e6600
Asus P5W DH
Corsair XMS2 PC2 6400 2x1gb
2 Sata II harddrives
XFX 7600GT
2 Dvd burners

I'm looking to do a little bit of overclocking on the processor, but not too much. What I need is a power supply that won't die on me, one that I can leave on for a few days. Noise is also a minor consideration.

I would appreciate any help you can provide on this matter.

P.S. I've been enticed by all the free Ultra 500W PSU's but I read on a forum of one dying and taking the mobo and processor with it. I can't afford to have that happen so I've steered clear.

Read this review http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=23 This is what I would seriously consider. DeadEye DATA on our opening page will give an extra 8% off. That amounts to free shipping.

What 500W Ultra PSU is free?

I'm not going to steer anyone to a V-Series. They're only "ok." The X-Finity is a much better product.

For quality PSU's, you just want to check out the sticky in this forum. The quieter units are going to be the Enhance and Seasonic built units. The Aerocool Zero-DBA is quiet too and isn't full of Fuhjyyu caps like other lower power Andyson units. :D

IMAO stay away from the free Ultra's with a build like yours;)

The Corsair HX520 would be an excellent PSU for your needs:D
and will last you thru those next few upgrades.

Hey Mr. Jonny, thanks again for the great resource this website is for anyone building a pc.

Here is the Free Ultra I mentioned: http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4587977

Now, to the suggestions:

I saw the Corsair PSU in a pc building review, but it seems a bit pricy, but if it is what is needed to keep the box running then I will definitely purchase.

I liked what I saw on the review for the Silverstone, and it seems to come to about $80 after shipping and discount.

Also, Jonny mentioned the X-finity series, they've got one for sale at $35 again, if this will cause my hard earned hardware to melt, then I won't even look at it, but:

You don't "need" the HX520, but if your into the future of your rig and new things to come, it's not that expensive;)

Its around $135 at Newegg, if you're aware of someplace cheaper let me know.

As for the future of the system, if you mean that I will add dual video cards, or such it probably won't happen. Most I'll do is add more hard drives (1,2+), ram.

That's a good PSU at a decent price. When are you buying this? Right now, next week?

Although that's a decent price, I never count the money from my rebate until the check is in my hand. So I'm still looking at that price as $69.99 (although the free freight is nice.) So I'm going to also lean towards GY's suggestion of considering the Silverstone ST50EF-PLUS at Deadeye Data. It's only $10 more and is more efficient and has more juice on the +12V rails.

Either one would be fine, though.

Yeah, with energy costs on the rise, efficiency is probably a good measure to consider. I can make up those $10, with the added assurance of a better supply.

Thanks again for all your help, I'll report back on how everything went. I'm still trying to figure out some minor points such as fans, cooling, thermal paste etc.

You're happy to pay out $310 for a cpu but not $119 for the HX520  :D

I would steer away from that motherboard, personally. The Asus P5N32-E is slowly hitting store shelves, it's a Nvidia 680i chipset, which will give you a bit more headrrom when overclocking, The Intel 975 is a fine chipset, just not that great of an overclocker. I'll leave the PSU questions to the PSU experts. ;)

Good point Supersix....

I sort of overlooked that since this was a post about looking for a new PSU in the PSU forums, but....

Why not a 680i chipset?

And the reason why I asked about when you're buying is because I might know of a price drop on the X-Finity APFC 500W, but I can't be sure until after the weekend.

Well, the reason behind the intel chipset is due to my interest in running alternative operating systems. Especially of the fruity kind. ;)
