ATi has left a very sour taste in my mouth with the X1xxx family of cards because of the random flicker problem.
There's a long thread about it over at Rage3D forums.

I own an ATi card and I have not faced this problem. Could you point me to a few specific links? I'm sticking with ATi as I am quite satisfied with its overall performance. Having tried the ,x1800xt, x800xl, 9600, 6600GT, 6800GT SLI, 6800GS SLI, NVidia has not performed upto my expectations. The problems I faced were shimmering and poor AA on buildings and railings. It is just a personal preference I always felt something was amiss with my NV cards.

Since when does "The Inquirer" break up any rumors? :p

It's commonplace and VERY annoying. When the GeForce8 comes out, this thing is toast.

If performance between the two(8800/R600) is minimal, I've made up my mind to go with NV just to rid myself of CCC.
I know I can use other means to get the same results from third party software, but I shouldn't have to.

More rumors regarding the length of the cooler and the power consumption of the upcoming ATI offerings i.e R600. Seriously, what is with the numbers 300W and DX-10? Everybody is throwing these numbers around. God forbid these actually turn out to be correct!

Since we have to go quiet for the G80 now, we will focus our attention on the ATi next generation R600. We got to know that R600 is a 300W beast built on 80nm process technology. To cool off that beast, you need a 4 heatpipes cooling solution. The R600 card is long from what we have seen, around G80GTX length but the cooler is longer than the PCB. It has two power connectors like the NV flagship card and it is dual slot of course. Also we knew that the last spin at TSMC is less than ideal so we can conclude it is suffering from poor yield at this point of time. It is slated to launch in Q1 2007 according to ATi's roadmap but it might delay further

http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4181They can delay that oversized, overheated, 300W+ monster forever as far as I'm concerned!

I'm really having a hard time sifting through all the "leaks" and sneak-previews, which not surprisingly are deviod of actual data. I'm just going to stop searching for info on these cards and wait for an actual test. :)

About the second week of November we'll find out about the G80/8800. Not sure about the ATI card. If (read *if*) it spanks the G80 cards in performance people are going to want it high power consumption or not. I'm sure ATI has heard the concerns. We just dont know their plans at this point about what they are going to do about it if anything. Personally, I'm hoping the rumors are over exaggerated. Time will tell.

I highly doubt even close to 300W... Even if they are going to have to trim clockspeed they are going to cut it down. Idk about you but CCC was never a problem. Just that Tray Tools is so much more compact. Minor annoyance at best for me. I hear some people getting 2 minute startups. Longest ever was first time for 25 secs...
