Don't worry about the new 8-pin PCI-e. The PCI-e consortium hasn't even come to terms with how that connector is going to work. Most of the power supplies that have an 8-pin PCI-e NOW have the wrong connector on them because they changed the spec!

I would hope that ATI will supply an adapter from 2 PCI-E adapters to the new plug. They will be SOL if they don’t.

They will. It'll be mandatory.

The 8-pin replaces two 6-pin's, so more juice can get to the card without having to use multiple connectors. An adapter will just adapt two 6-pin connectors to one 8-pin, so you'll need a PSU with four PCI-e's if you plan to run SLI/Crossfire.

The new 8-pin config also has sense wires riding piggy back to the 12V leads. Naturally, you'll lose this with an adapter, but if you have a PSU with good voltage regulation, it shouldn't pose a problem.

Wait a second! The power connectors for the R600 and other future cards will be from only 1 8-pin connector? I though it was 1 6-pin PCI-e and 1 8-pin.

Where did you hear or see that?

I really don't think that's correct at all.

The only aspect of my information that I may be incorrect on is the number of connectors: 1 8-pin vs. 2 8-pins. I personally (contrary to what I've been told) doubt there will only be one 8-pin connector on high end cards because the new PCI-e spec allows for 300W cards. With only 75W going through the slot, that will require aux power connectors to deliver 225W. If the current 6-pin connectors are only spec'd for 75W, I'm not sure how one extra 12V, one extra ground and some sense wires are going to help deliver three times as much power.

On the other hand.... if the adapters (or "dongles") adapt two 6-pin to one 8-pin, you certainly couldn't have two 8-pin connectors on each card because then each card would require four 6-pin connectors! w00t!
