Hello,

I've got a bit of a problem with understanding Active PFC. Before i get down to the details I've got to tell how impressed I am with your forums, it was recommended to me by the retailer i was going to buy my PSU from as he wasn't sure about the whole APFC thing either. You guys really do know your power supplies :D ... I've been running through the site without singing up for a day cause i couldn't stop reading.

I'm from India, and hence run in the 230/240v environment.
I'm planning on getting a new PSU, either a Corsair 750TX or the Tagan BZ700 or BZ800. All of which have APFC. My current UPS is a non sine wave one, I wanted to know what the link between the two are (APFC & sine waves), and if it's safe to run a APFC PSU on a normal UPS.

The sine wave ones here are super expensive when you factor in various import duties and taxes as APC are the only people with such a range here. I wouldn't buy one unless it was absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the link, I guess i should have looked more before starting a new thread. :o
Just one question however, how would i know if my UPS is a simulated sine wave one..... is it any UPS that's not a true sine wave one?

What brand and model do you have?

What brand and model do you have?

Have two actually, one of them is APC BR800.

The second one is a 1000va UPS from an Indian manufacturer called Proview, they don't have a website or their product specs listed on the web. The only thing mentioned among its features that sounds even remotely technical is "Boost & Buck AVR to stabilize input voltage".

I'm so ignorant about all this, hope I don't sound too dumb. :)

What are your system specs?

You really only need to worry about the sine wave if you're running close to the capability of your PSU (which I doubt you would be, but we might as well ask and get it out of the way.)

No where close to the limit.

Don't worry about it.

I've always used simulated sine 800 to 1000VA line interactive UPS's with my computers and never had a problem. Using APFC since 2001.

The reasoning is explained in the other thread.

The only other time a non-sine UPS can become an issue is if you are using something other than a PSU on it for a PC...like a motor on a filter or pump (ie my fish tanks). And then they still work they just get louder and hotter.

That's good to know.
