i put together a new computer this weekend, but im seriously overwhelmed by the amount of psu's there are to choose from. i thought my old psu would work in my new computer, but it doesnt.

computer:
q6600 quad / 2.4ghz, i plan to overclock at some point
4gb ram
gtx 280
5 harddrives (i know this is kind of stupid, but i just feel "safer" having seperate drives for different media)

i havent included like the full specifications of my computer, just the stuff i thought was important, if you need me to list everything i will

the psu must be single rail (i have read the "single vs multiple rail" post, etc, and i still want to use "single" rail) AND modular.
i live in the uk and would prefer not to pay extortionate customs charges, so it needs to be available in the uk too.
also i would like a psu that has "headroom", i MAY install a second gtx 280 eventually, but not for some time.

thankyou in advance for any advice you can provide me with.

ps: i have searched the forums and other websites but the more psu's i read about, the more nervous i feel about choosing The Right One.

There are only a handful of units I can think of that meet all those requirements:

Corsair HX620
Silverstone ZM1200M (set the OCP switch to single 12V)
Silverstone DA750 and up

I'm not sure I would run two 280's on that particular Corsair unit. The TX750 would be better for that, but it's not modular.

Look up the Silverstone DA1000 and DA1200 PSUs. Those are the only single rail modular PSUs in the 1000W range that I know of.

If you can give up the modular requirement this becomes easier.

Yup, unless you're playing the same game as the like of FUGGER, Macci, Sampsa, etc, there's no absolute need for a single 12v rail PSU for daily usage of average user -even when he's quite a power user himself.

Speaking out of experience, i use a Silverstone Olympia 750w now, yet i still miss my good old Thermaltake Toughpower 700w Modular, not because of its modularity, but simply because of its smoothness, no hiccup whatsoever during its duty as my powerhorse backthen -with this Olympia, i experience house MCB's dropping once in a while when the PSU is turned on through my AVR servo motor from cold, no power condition.
