I've been meaning to investigate DragonflyBSD. HAMMER looks interesting; I'm curious how it'll compare to BTRFS.

On my main rig, Vista Home Premium x64. On my P4, Ubuntu; on the living room system, XP Pro; and on my sister's laptop, Vista Home Premium x86 (came like that).

Hi
That is a good question. I was once in the same situation as you were. I did a lot of research. Lot of vendors offer linux and since its open source you can download it for free. I highly recommend UBUNTU 8.10 which is the latest version. UBUNTU has very good features and is good for beginners if you are migrating from windows. You dont have to learn anything to start using it. Gradually when you get used to u can use the command mode to learn.

Spacewalker1 = XP Pro
Spacewalker2 = XP Pro
Spacewalker3 = XP Pro
Lian-Li1 = Windows 7 Pro
Lian-Li2 = XP Pro 64 (Just a file server and I had a legal copy collecting dust.)
Fliptop 3 = XP Home/CrunchBang Linux.
Fliptop 4 = Windows 7 Starter (Came with starter. Will most likely become Windows 7 Pro.)
E-mail = XP Pro
Lenovo1 = Windows 7 RTM (Will probably go back to XP Pro as that is what it came with.)

On this Mac Pro 1.1 (2x Dual-core XEON 5150 CPUs) I use

Mac OSX 10.6.2 "Snow Leopard" :) 99.9% of the time.

When I have absolutely no other choice, XP Pro via Boot Camp. :wall:

It's the best overall system I've used yet. I've been on the Apple Cart for two years now and love it. My next computer? Another one of these, please!

OSX is kinda Linux-like but without needing to build-it-yourself.
With a limited number of hardware/software combinations and a developer-wary philosophy that limits what a Program can do to the OS (*cough* NoRegistry*cough*), Apple does a pretty good job of getting things to work.

Admittedly, if you want things your way you're mostly out of luck but if Steve's way works for you it's great.

It works for me,
Keri

PS> A preliminary analysis of the major Hardware components indicates solid design, good soldering and quality parts like mostly Japanese capacitors in the Delta-branded proprietary PSU. This beast is also very quiet for the amount of heat blown out of the back. Mine was used as a floor model for over a year before I got it and 2 years later all the fans are still silent, the system fast and stable as always.

I use windows 7 ultimate x64 on my main pc, same in x86 form on the dining room pc, and the pc a my bench also has the x86 variant. My favorite mac os when running on powerpc is 10.4 when on intel 10.6. Windows xp on my moms and my aunts laptops (celeron 1066 and p3 1166 respectivy), and windows xp on the systems i sell. I use ubuntu 10.04 occassionally, but its a major pita.
