Guys,

I'd like to see a definitive triumph of quality over quantity. Since many of you here have access numerous PSU's, maybe somebody would be willing to try out a good quality, low power unit on a fairly high end system (non-overclocked and later overclocked). It would be a good idea to see how badly we are being fed crap by various manufacturers. Also, next time somebody recommends a kW unit for a modest build, you get to hit him in the mouth.

Many a time, experiments prove theoretical conjecture wrong.

What say you?

i can contribute my small share of the "survey"...
I had a HEC AR-TF 400W (the old atx12v 1.3 one - has one 12V rail @18A) powering:
A64 3200+@2.47/1.5V (stock 2.0/1.4V)
6800GS
2XHDD
2XDVD
2X512MB
PVR 150 (PCI TV card)
so far so good. when i've tried oc'ing the 6800gs, it worked flawlessly at first but after about an hour of gaming i got a message saying that the video card doesn't have enough power so its reseting to its original values. so i guess that was the limit.

I can't remember it correctly... but when my brother had a Zalman 460W psu in RMA, he was running his computer with a generic 300W PSU from and old P3 1Ghz system. It was running ok on a Opteron 170 (dual core), 2GB ram, 2x250GB HD and 1 7600GT, even at full load. He doesn't play games so I can't tell you if It was stable at 3D.

I have several customers running P4 3ghz pc's on rosewell 350w psu that come in the Rosewell cases ..never a problem
But their simple pc's that do vary little except surf and light gaming (Hoyle Cards DXball ..etc)

I would like to see this as well. Anyone who reads my posts at ocforum.com knows I have a semi-aggressive stance towards unnecessarily powerful PSUs (and the whole teenage script kiddy-gamer-overclocker scene).

Super Nade also posts there, sup

my correct system :
C2D e6600
Asus p5b DLX
2GB ram
250GB HD
Audigy2
X700 256mb
(not OC, im afriad to OC )

the PS that powering this system (for now)
is the Enermax 350W (i got it for 5+\- years already, not even 1 problem)

Well.... I think I'm going to figure this out with my own rig this weekend....

When I went back to stock cooling on my PC (stripped off the water cooling) I also installed the SevenTeam 1kW PSU. That thing is WAY too loud for me, even at idle loads. I'd love to put my Seventeam external 500W back in, but when I have the Corsair Nautulis sitting on top of the case, there's no room for the Seventeam.

So I'm going to grab an X-Finity 600W and throw it in there and see how it likes running 3DMark with a 4000+ and a pair of 7800GTX 512's. Probably will work just fine considering PC Apex (http://reviews.pcapex.com/power_supply/ultra_products_x-connect_2_550w_psu.php) just reviewed an Ultra X2 550W on a DFI Lanparty w/ an X2 3800, two 7900GT cards and four hard drives.

Jon, could you go a bit lower, say 480W and see how things pan out?
I was looking for the Seventeam unit you mentioned everywhere without luck. No chance of seeing this in the US I suppose .:(

Unless you're talking about the external, which was sold by MGE as well. Not sure it's available anymore.

I don't have anything handy that's smaller that I know for a fact will support my two 7800GTX cards. I have some 500W units, but they're dual 12V rail and the 7800GTX's kill the stupid 20A limiters.

If I had a single 12V rail 500W, I'd be all over that.

I think he was talking about my external SevenTeam 500W, which would be the same as the MGE/XG Magnum "600W."

I have a single-rail 550w TTGI (http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cases/TTGI_PLUG-N_550W_1.html). If you want to borrow it for a test, I could let you have it as long as I have something to run my PC in the mean time. It doesn't need to be anything fancy.... I know TTGI has a pretty bad rep, but it has a really stable 12v rail in my system when using 1.65v through my 3000+ Venice at 3ghz and my x850xt at 610/660. There's a possibility it could be up to the task since it has 30A on the 12v rail.
