Are 8800GT cards with 256MB any good? I see ZZF has an Asus (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10007560&ps=homain3) for $130, plus a $30 MIR. I figure it'd at least beat a 9600GT, but I'm not sure. My only real reservation is that my monitor is 1680x1050, though I'm not really a "latest and greatest" game type of person. My bigger motivation is that G92 has the newer Purevideo options.

Well, the reduced RAM will limit your resolution capability, but more importantly is that if they're using halving the RAM as a cost down measure, where else did Asus cost down the card?

Instead 8800GT 256 go for 9600GT (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gainward-bliss9600gt-512gs.html).

Hmm, 9600GT beats the 256MB 8800GT, according to that. I wasn't sure if it would, considering it's got so fewer shaders.

There are many reviews out there. I give you one more (http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_9600_gt_performance/).
IMO for your resolution 512MB memory are more important than lack of 48 stream processors.

9600GT is definitely better than the 8800gt 256mb. The 256mb is just way too cut down.

Been testing a 9600GT for a few weeks, it's a decent card. Did well up against my older 8800GTS 640MB, unless I played Oblivion @ 16x12 w/4xAA and texture map enhancements, then it kinda fell by the wayside. Switching down to 12x10 fixed that tho.

In case you haven't made your purchase yet. I raise you $10(after mail in rebate, but you get factory OC and a game) for this 8800GT.

I haven't yet. My birthday is on the 30th, and my family said they are giving me about $100, so I'm waiting until then, so I can add in personal funds. That Gigabyte is tempting, to say the least.
