I am buildign a new pc and time to change my old silverstone zeus 850W.
I really like the Ultra X3 , very nice power supply and according to jonny reviews it also perfoms real well.
But i was looking at the rating here http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108088 but somethign seems off.
How can they put the ultra x3 ont he same level has the corsair HX series?
I know the corsair are good power supplyes , but do they really belong in the same category has the ultra X3?
I mean the ultra x3 has a 8 pin PCI-e and the HX 620 does not ,also huge difference btween 620w and 1000w , or maybe i am mistaken.
And on top of it the ultra look a million times better then the HX series , not that it matters but its a plus.
I just dont get those ratings at extremesystems.
Also doesnt ultra have the patent for modular desing on power supplys? if i am not mistaken.

I think you missed this part :
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2837092&postcount=310
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2890363&postcount=322
Anyway, those categories are based on the quality of the PSUs, not how much power they can provide.
The Ultra has 400W more, and it's obvious it should have more connectors.
So what if Ultra has the patent for the modular design, that doesn't mean anything when it comes to performance:confused:

I am not a power supply expert i am just lookign at Jonny reviews.
And byt looking at those i can see that the
enermax galaxy DXX 850W total score 8
Enermax Galaxy EGA1000EWL total score 9
Corsair HX620W 620W total score 9
PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W total score 9 ( and actually got an 8.5 in performance)
PC Power and Cooling 1kW total score 8.5
Silverstone Zeus ST85ZF 850W total score 9
Ultra Products X3 1000W total score 9.5
on teh extremesystem site he also has Silverstone OP/DA <700W both in tier 1 and tier 2 ?
Clearly accordind to Jonny reviews the X3 seems to belong in tier 1. The ultra got an higer score then all the tier 1 power supply , of course .5 is for aestetics , but still ranks in tier1.
Like i sayd i am not an expert in PSU but i am gona trust Jonny since i know he does deep and good reviews of power supplys.
But on the xtremesytem site something seems to be off.
I would like to see what Jonny thinks of this.
"So what if Ultra has the patent for the modular design, that doesn't mean anything when it comes to performance"
i never sayd it did lol. Also aestetics doesn`t have anything to do with performance.

Look... those "tier lsits" aren't based on any factual information. They're based on individual's opinion. People should not look at them as authoritative sources.

I want to upgrade my power supply and want something it the 1000w range.
Since i live in canada in a msall town my options are limited.
I also would liek a modular PSU to keep things clean inside the case.
I know PC power and cooling do not make modular designs and my only good options down here are the ultra x3 , enermax and the Thermaltake Toughpower Cable Management 1200W.
between the Thermaltake and the Ultra wich one do you reccomend.
thx

Either. They're both good units. Some people narrow down to whether they like the FlexForce cables or not. FlexForce cables are easier to hide, but if you DON'T hide them, they can actually look worse.

Like Jonny said, those tiers are based on personal opinions, not cold hard fact. But your assertion that the X3 "looks better" is also an opinion. The HX620 does come with 8 pin cables now (6+2 pins) and I am sure if you wanted to you could get more from Corsair. How are you going to say the Corsair doesn't belong in the same tier as the Ultra just because the Ultra can output more power? It is also more expensive because of that.
Also if you are trying to rank them based on the scores Jonny gave them I think you should know even though he rated the PC P&C Turbocool 1Kw a whole point lower than the Ultra, he actually put it in Tier 1 of his now retired list and the X3 in tier 2, mostly because of its build quality, yet it lost points in his review due to noise, cost and he thought it didn't look all that great.
