My boss in Nevada sent me down one of their internet servers, due to the
utter lack of hardware smarts their IT doesen't have:p
I'll never figure out how "they" get the big bucks, when I end up saving their asses everytime:p
Anyhoo, this server seems to like frying hard drives every other month,
3 WD SE 160gb so far:eek:
The IT replaced everything but the PSU, because he said it was
"top notch":p
He wound up getting fired today for stealing thousands of dollars worth of
programs:p
I already know the problem with this server has got to be the PSU:)
I opened her up and all looks great, except for the Fuhjy's on the secondary side{purple ones}but it has 2x 820uF 85C Teapo's on the primary side.
specs on the server are:
Sempron 3100+
ECS mobo
512mb DDR2
2X80MM
onboard video and sound
Rosewill RV400-2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182014
I've jumped the PSU on it's own with a few fans hooked to it, and all is up
to spec:confused:
But takeing no chances, I ordered a Xclio 450 for it:)
I hate to say this, but I'm going to try and run it for a couple of weeks on a
similar rig, to try to recreate the problem
wish me luck:D

5V spikes at boot can kill a HDD's logic chip. You will not find a spike w/o an o'scope.
Some Maxtor HDDs just commit suicide. Google images of burnt Maxtor. :)
ECS uses crap caps, the one in my sister's rig is populated with GSC caps...Yuck
MD Willington over at badcaps.net runs an ECS support forum if you need his help...he is a sharp tech. You betcha!
eWiz.com has/had some 360W Enhance units for real cheap. A friend of mine(Zap) uses two in his portable gaming boxes and swears by them. He opened one up and the build quality put Antec to shame. He did post pics in the PSU Forum over at badcaps.
That's all I got CAD.

The ECS mobo is all OST caps.
Well I know the WD SE 160gb's don't commit Harri carri,[without good reason}
I've been running two of them 24/7 for over 3 years:D
That's a nice deal on the Enhance, but the Xclio is already ordered and on the way:o

The ECS mobo is all OST caps.
That sucks.
You know, I looked at my "cheap" Biostar M7NCG and damned if all the caps on it weren't Nippon Chemi-Con!!!

I'm typing this on a old Gigabyte GA7N400L with all Nippon caps, plus, 2
of them look like their ready to explode at anytime:p
This mobo has lost it's Floppy controller, onboard sound, LAN, and the #4
memory bank so far, only after 2 and a half years of 24/7 service:o

My bad, I was too hungry for dinner when I first posted.
Yes, ECS generally uses OST not GSC and OST are considered inferior.
Yes, sister's board is OST.
I believe my abit is all Rubycons.
However, looking around, I found a (dun dun dun) rulycon. A single rulycon, on an otherwise all rubycon board.

Rulycon is a Chinese knock-off of the highly respected Nipponese brand Rubycon. You probably know this, others may not.
If it is under 8mm in diameter, like 4mm, it is probably not highly stressed and will be a non-issue.
IIRC, dood, over at badcaps posted this pic awhile back. Crazy stuff! Atleast they used a Rubycon

But they didn't even use the correct value Rubycon to reflect what the outer can specified! I don't know what that cap was used for, but that large a value difference will have a huge effect. If it's a filter cap for a DC power supply, then there's going to be more AC ripple with a smaller value cap. If that's used in an audio circuit, then the frequency response will be very different.

The Rosewill is still searching for Pulsars and Neutron stars with Einstein,
an no dead hard drives as yet:p
All tho I think the intake fan might of spun a bearing:o
It's starting to make all kinds of screeching noises at high temps:p
Am I sure it will last another week?
Place your bets:)

I'm not sure that I would spend $5 on a Rosewill:p
I'll just yank a 80mm out of one of my L&C's;)
Galv, it was a RuLycon. 8mm wide. looked Identical to the rest of the rubycon's, but... not.
