....of the year. ;)
I need to build something for CES.
This is where I'm at:
680i motherboard
Pair of 8800GTX cards
Quad Core QX6700
4GB of RAM
1kW PSU
X-Fi Elite Pro sound card
Input?

Is it just to impress or is it supposed to fit in a certain category?

That Audigy seems out of place on that build;)

Yea... a X-Fi Elite Pro will be better for a really high end PC (multimedia PC, not professional) :)
A pair of 150GB Raptors X would be good too.

Oops. Sorry. My "sound card knowledge" is lacking. But I do know that if I used on board I'd get laughed at.
I'll change the card to an X-Fi Elite.
Raptor X's don't do much for me but look cool.
The build has to impress and perform.
This is going in the carbon fiber case.

Get the Raptors without the window, their $50 cheaper with the still blazing
performance:D

Well you could stack it with a drive array of something like Maxtor Atlas 15K II's or Fujitsu MAU's. :D
Sure would be different than everyone else with Raptors.
I wandered over to SR and put together a head to head of the 4 tops for you:http://www.storagereview.com/php/benchmark/suite_v4.php?typeID=10&testbedID=4&osID=6&raidconfigID=1&numDrives=1&devID_0=277&devID_1=272&devID_2=311&devID_3=279&devCnt=4

Yeah, I don't want to add a SCSI card.
I'll try to get Raptors. Just WD is such a pain. I might be able to get Seagates for free.

:( You said overdo. And everyone will have Raptors.
Ok well then stack it with as many 750gb drives as you can :D

Your talking Ultra 320 SCSI now,
no comparison for the poor old SATA
Those access times would do it for me:eek:

Just run 4x Maxtor DM11 U16 500gb in RAID 0 or 0+1, depending on their preference:)

don't bother with the raptors... a couple of the 750gb seagate 7200.10's with NCQ and 16mb cache's will perform quite nicely and give you nearly 10x the formatted capacity of two 150gb raptors.
Auzentech and M-audio make very good high end sound cards.

Those are fast drives?
Their not "slow" by any means if thats what your asking,
I have one so far and it's as fast if not faster then the DM10 U16 300gb's:)
If your looking for all out speed,
consider the other options presented to you:)

Gonna do any watercooling?
No. Not this time. I think I might end up having to build 15 of these, so I don't want to go through the hassle of H2O.
If it was for me? Yeah. Especially since I got the new Corsair kit. :D

15 huh? Need any help? ;)
Auzentech and M-audio make very good high end sound cards.
I've got the X-Meridian in my PC and it's really nice.
looking good, sorta.
i680 board
2 8800GTX
QX6800
XFI Elite OMFG edition
4 gigs ram (not any ram, make sure it's the most overkill of all: Corsair Dominator.)
Blu-ray
as many 750 drives as you can get into there, in 0+1 or 5.
Silverstone olympia 1kw?
and a 12" monochrome crt.

I guess I'm gonna have to put Ultra's booth on my to-do list at CES this year. :) Do I get a free carbon fiber case for visiting????? :P

Just don't stack them on top of one another.
They tend to get pretty warm in a RAID array;)

The Seagate 7200.10 models now match what Raptors can do and at a much lower cost. And this from a Raptor user and fan(moi). Also there is a new ASUS 680i Striker SLI mobo review out. This mobo is going to be very popular I think. Unfortunately in the review they didnt use a Conroe chip.

I'm using the eVGA board because it supports the quad core.
I'm under the impression that the Asus Striker doesn't support the quad core.

I don't think you'll see many if any XP boxes at CES, this will be running the final build of Vista, right?
The storage options are where you really have the opportunity to separate yourself from the rest of the crowd with the config you have so far. Get a true hardware PCIe raid card like an Areca or 3Ware and four or six modern SATA drives, make a RAID 0+1 array and watch it fly. Windows Vista supports/utilizes the new hybrid flash memory hd's being introduced soon by Samsung and others. The primary benefit of the hybrid tech would be nearly instant resume from S3 (with Vista) and reduced power draw from the hd's.

Nah I wouldn't go with the Domniator RAM. The heatsinks for those are way to long and that will interfere with alot of large heatsinks.
I would get these:cool:

Nope guys the memory sticks you ought to get is Cellshock PC8000, extremely fast, and they also clocks very nice.
Though i'm not sure you can get them in the USA. They are made in Germany, with micron D9 chips.
(the coolest thing about them is that the pc6400 version is exactly the same except for SPD info, and they clock to the same speeds)
Btw. every 680i mobo is made by foxconn, only difference is the stickers and bundles, this should even be true for the ECS version (the brand does take the coolness away... says the dude with the asrock mobo).

From what I'm given to understand the 680i's sold by tier ones are built by them as well.

Which PSU will you pick? Instead of a 1kW unit, maybe you can show everybody that quality trumps over quantity and use a sub kW unit. :)

Yeah... I was talking to an AMD guy about 4x4 (Quadfather) and he said that I'd need a 1kW for that.
But two dual-core CPU's and four GPU's... Ok... I'll bite. 1kW might be a good idea. ;)

Yea, 4 CPU's and 4 8800GTX's would be a mega monster graphical combo. You can add a 1 km x 1 km monitor to your super-duper-whopper computer as well. :)
More seriously, you really need a kick-ass monitor to take full advantage of an 8800GTX SLI setup. But really Jon, I'd rather see you upto your ears in PSU innards and pictures of exploding PSU's.That's just me. :)

Put small LEDS on the edges of the RaptorX windows..
BLING!
And end-all-to-be-all gaming rigs use 2x Raptos in a RAID0, with a big hinkin' 750GB for storage.. Maybe 2x 750GB in a RAID1? :D

The Noob (me) says:
4 disks, everyone will have raptors so get the Seagates, in RAID0+1
Speed and saftey, gamers will probably go RAIDO for speed, the extra drives and 0+1 set up will be slick.
Everyone will have like, 2 raptors and 2 seagate 750's.
Out do them. 24 maxtor atlas V 15k's, in raid 0 + 1.
