Hello,

I was at radio shack and I noticed they had a few thermaltake PSU's on the shelf.

Thermaltake Pure Power 600W:

Thermaltake TR2 550W:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2872509&cp=2032061.2063031.2063121&allCount=26&fbn=Brand%2FThermaltake&f=Brand%2F1000958%2F&fbc=1&parentPage=family

Thermaltake ToughPower 700W:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2872510&cp=2032061.2063031.2063121&allCount=26&fbn=Brand%2FThermaltake&f=Brand%2F1000958%2F&fbc=1&parentPage=family

Are any of these good quality? I'm mostly interested in the 600W or the 550W cause the 700 is a bit expensive...

System I'd be planning to power with one:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz
2GB DDR2-667MHz PC2-5300 Ram
Western Digital Caviar 500GB SATA
XFX 8800GS 384MB GDDR3 XXX Alpha Dog Edition
2 120MM Case Fans
DVD-RW Drive

I really don't plan on getting a new PSU and 8800GS yet but I'm just trying to figure out my options on a PSU.
Would the corsair 450 be a better option? Would it even be enough?

Thanks,
~Lawlrus96

The Toughpower's a very good unit. The others... meh.

I think a distinction has to be made here:

Regular Purepower: not that great

Purepower RX: Great value for the money

Yes, Corsair VX450 will be enough for your rig, no problems, Excellent choice

The only PSU's they sell near me is the Thermaltake Pure Power at radio shack, and the Allied 500W PSU, at the local computer shop...

After reading the review of the 500W Allied on the front page even seeing an allied PSU on the shelf makes me want to run for the hills. I asked the guy behind the counter why he was selling such low quality units and he replied "Because We've had good luck with them."

So my question is even though the Pure Power isn't the greatest how bad is it really?
I need to replace an old Hiper 250W in my old PC, and was thinking of grabbing a second one for my new rig. But the pure power aren't dangerous like the allied units are they?
I can't seem to locate any reviews on the website of the lower wattage TT units.

The Purepowers (non RX models) are average quality but overrated. The 550W would likely power the rig in question, but the Corsair 450W would be about as powerful and much better constructed.

Edit - yup, the Purepower in question is good for 29A combined at 12V. That's terrible for a 600W unit. The TR2's are about the same.

The TR2 RX's are Channel Well PSF models which would make the "500" and "550" models about the same thing as the TR2 W0093/W0094 and W0101/W0102 which are PSF's too. Main difference would be passive PFC for the RX's and either active or no PFC for the TR2's. All of them are overrated by Thermaltake by 50 watts. A TR2 "500" W0093 was load tested here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/thermaltake-psu-roundup_24.html

I expect the energy efficiency to be even worse...not much else bad stands out...the ripple was high but he was already over the real total watts of the unit.

EDIT: hmm no wait...The TR2's are either passive or no PFC...not active...efficiency would be the same (very poor)

Wow, this stinks. Even my Vantec ION 460W (supposedly) has 30A on a single 12V rail.
Oklahoma Wolf : What is the general opinion on the ION 460W vs. the Sirtec PurePower? Just received a brand new / sealed ION 460W as a return for an RMA and am deciding whether to sell it.

I'd give the small edge to the Vantec. OEM is Topower.
