I've got a friend who needed a new powersupply and I had one of these laying around. However, during shipping, something came loose in the PSU.

I finally had time to install it tonight, and discovered that something had broken loose inside that was dangling and obstructing the main fan.

took the fan grate off, and looking between the fan blades I saw something encased in rubbery compound (the white stuff) that at one point was affixed to something green and hard-plasticky. I was able to nudge it back into place, but it was floating free -- and I couldn't tell if there was something thermal that was supposed to be going on in there.

I'm going to try to get more info and pics, but this sounds like the PSU is far from dead and it being such a solid PSU, I'd like him to benefit from it. Any ideas what it could be?

The shots were as clear as I could make them, and the grate is off. Didn't try to take the fan off. Didn't see any solder, just a white compound that look like it was supposed to meld with the green boxy thing -- which is suspended under a couple of copper coils when the PSU is installed properly.

I'm thinking that he's talking about the green box in the upper right of this picture.

So if that has come loose, is there some sort of compound he can use to reattach it to the coils and keep it out of the fan?

If the green box has fallen off, RMA the supply. It's a capacitor that's part of the transient filter. If it's just a blob of the white glue, that can just be removed without issues.
