Question from a neophyte. 2-yr old gaming rig w/ a pair of GeForce 7600GT cards. Had a problem with random restarts, Geek Squad looked at it, didn't find anything. Had a local computer repair shop look at it, same result, except he patched the BIOS, something about SLI optimization. System came with a 500W PSU. The local guy recommended upgrading to a 600W PSU and suggested a Thermaltake Purepower.

Any advantages/disadvantages/opinions on TT PSU's? I came across quite a few older forum threads that had some poor opinions of TTs. Most suggested Enermax PSUs. The Noisetaker 600W is only a few dollars more than the TT, so cost is not an issue.

I don't think a PC with a 7600GT needs > 500W unless the 500W that's in there is a total piece of crap.

What kind of 500W is it?

A bundled with case PSU ?

Regarding Thermaltake PSU, as long you buy one within the family of ToughPower or PurePower RX (their current mid to highend offering), i think you'll be fine -just get one with a good value in it.

About Enermax, IMHO they're rather the anti thesis of Thermaltake PSU, they were once a powerhouse pun intended, but now they're somehow slumping in term of fame & acknowledgement in the PSU world.

Johnny is right (obviously), you don't need that much power.
Not to mention the fact these two PSUs are expensive, in my country the Pure Power is nearly as much as a Seasonic M12 500 :wtf:

See if you can find a Corsair VX 450 or 550, Seasonic S12 II -430, Antec Eartwatts 430 or Silverstone Element 500W

Your system requires somewhere around 250W, so any of the above will do just fine

It came with a NZXT 500W PSU. Getting conflicting opinions from the users here and the folks that had their hands on the system. I personally know nada about the power requirements for the cards, so clarification would be much appreciated. The Geek Squad from Best Buy, as well as the local computer repair tech, both said the PSU was running at max capacity to supply enough power for the graphics cards and recommended upgrading to at least a 600W PSU. The 'puter is used primarily for gaming, WoW in particular, and the graphix options are maxxed out in the game.

NZXT PSU's are good, unless they're NZXT cases that came bundled with NZXT power supplies. Just take a look at the label on that PSU and you'll see a UR logo on it with a number starting with the letter "E" just below it. Tell us what that number is.

You do not need more than a 500W PSU.

Real troubleshooting:

Make sure that under ADVANCED tab in SYSTEM PROPERTIES, START UP AND RECOVERY, click on SETTINGS and uncheck AUTOMATICALLY RESTART.

If you have access to a multi-meter, plug it into an available Molex connector and make sure your +12V and +5V are where they need to be. http://www.bfgpower.com/troubleshooting.html#DMM
