That NeoHE your doing this month for the "before and after re-cappin",
Is it a Neo 480?:)

Oops... Yeah... it's not an HE. Fixed.

It emits a funny smell at 400W, by the way.

And you didn't tell me you were a smoker. :(

It's 4:20 here all the time, and I have a Turkish craveing too;)

BTW: You never asked, was I suppose to inform you of this?

Yep, and if you throw 500w at it, it will smell even funnier:p

I guess smokers just don't realize what they impose on non-smokers. ;)

One time, I had to work on site at this couple's house. They worked from home. They were both smokers. The whole place was yellow. And when I pulled the PC out of the desk, it was yellow and sticky with nicotine. And when I opened it up, I found that it died because the CPU fan stopped spinning because of all of the sticky nicotine clogging up the fan.

I don't know... I'd think if I were the customer, I'd say, "you might want to send a smoker over, because we're smokers and so everything is all yellow and sticky and smelly and it might gross out a non-smoker."

;) :D

Hopefully it's not too bad... not only am I allergic to cigarette smoke, I have asthma too. I'll probably have to clean it up some before I bring it over to my workbench, which is next to my bed.

Still, as long as it's not as bad as the $3 VCR I got from the Salvation Army store one time, I should be ok ;)

For one thing,
I smoke about 2 packs a "WEEK'.
I only smoke in one room in the house, my office.
The only thing that gets smoked 24/7, is the Chronic.
And I hope your not going to say that your allergic to that:p
I really hope you don't think my house or my office is sticky and yellow:p
I'm sorry if everybody might have a second opinion on me now that you know I smoke.
Just do what I use to do back in the day with burned out channels on amps,
take the cover off, wrap in a paper towel, and spray it down with room
deodorizer or Febreeze,
That will take care of any smells in that PSU:)
Good thing you don't have my Enermax:p , it smells like a Stones concert:p

lol - that's almost as bad as the VCR I was talking about... not even I could save that thing. Cleaned it seven times IIRC and it still didn't work right. So, I threw it in a dim corner of the basement for parts.

LOL, I've seen some bad shit myself:p
But never fear,my PSU wasen't on 24/7 with 5 people chainsmoking in the
same room:)
And it "shoulden't' be yellow and sticky, unless jG had an accident:lol:

Hey jG,
Speaking of my Neo,
Have any problems appeared yet? Besides it being a smokers PSU?:p

He says ripple measured ok, so the Fuhjyyus have some life left in them. Whether or not recapping will help things is unknown.

It would increase the lifespan undoubtedly:)

Oklahoma Wolf

That it certainly would :)

I've had a chance to examine the scope measurements myself... not only is it within spec, it's well within spec. However, the 12v line does look to have a wee bit of noise in it. Whether or not that's normal I can't say. However, this is an independantly regulated design which CWT has always been good at designing so it remains to be seen how much the recap will actually help.

So your saying, all it needs is a modded fan sensor?:)
I almost can't believe that PSU didn't fail, has he hotbox -tested it yet?

Oklahoma Wolf
11-10-2006, 05:21 PM
I don't think he hotboxed it... IIRC I asked him not to so we could make sure it lived to see the recapping part ;)

Agreed:)
But I still think it woulden't blow up in the hotbox, mabey just shut down every 5 mins:p
I wonder what that funny smell was at 400w?

Smelled like burning hair.

Anyhoo.....

+3.3V @ 11A = 3.25V

+5V @ 14A = 4.90V

+12V1 @ 10A = 11.98V

+12V2 @ 10A = 12.00V

-12V @ .2A and +5VSB @ 2A

115V input. 360.1W ouput. 73% efficiency.

Are there going to be any pics so we can all badmouth it before OW gets ahold of it?:D

The pics are OKW's problem. He has a nicer camera than I do. :D

Yeah, I'm sure you have more then enough shit to take pics of anyways:p

BTY: Whats wrong with your camera?
I think you and your camera take the best shots of PSU's I've seen to date:D
And I'll bet you 7 L&C's + 1 real DEER PSU,
that I'm not alone in that thought.:p

Think of the fun you could have with those:p
Yeah right, your wife would probabley kill me and you both for bringing home
8 more victims;)

You should see the really old reviews. I had an Olympus 3000 Zoom and that took great pics. It was big and heavy... but still managed to get stolen.

So I bought a Canon Sureshot and.... well... it's great for a "mini" camera, but I miss the big, bulky Olympus.

The Olympus would take a great macro, low light shot the first time. The Sureshot takes about three or four shots, typically with a halogen hanging overhead. :(

It's good to have a 3 year old as a gaffer, though.

I'd forgotten about the Olympus getting stolen :(

My Nikon 3700 doesn't do really low light very well itself, and if you turn off the flash it needs a tripod to keep from taking a shaky picture. It does warn you though if shutter speed is likely to be a problem.

My 4 year old neice is trying to be like her daddy and help him with his
Powerpoint presentations, she sees my cousin put in his disc with all his
saved info, over and over again, one day she decides to get it ready for him,
but instead of putting in a disc, she drops in and shoves a half eaten pop tart
into his brand new Benq DVDRW:eek:
Not once, not twice, but 3 times on 3 different drives:eek:
He asked me for advice, I said take away her pop tart privileges:p
Are kids grand or what?:D

Mike (the guy that does most of the web work here) said it was because of the chip the Canon uses and that even though it's a 6mpx, the processor isn't fast enough to snap that shot.

Oklahoma Wolf
11-12-2006, 06:21 PM
That could be... I know I'm probably sticking to Nikon now after all the stories about the Canons. Still can't get over being able to fix mine in less than 30 seconds with a firm whack on the side :)

I have some pictures now - the Neo and FSP showed up a few hours ago. As you can see, the PCB has been removed from the case, and all relevant caps have been desoldered and removed. I wanted to get that wee one next to the main transformer too (it's the flyback cap), but there are too many SMT components underneath so I'm leaving it be. It is unlikely this one will fail anyway. Pics are dark-ish on purpose to avoid glare. I am not able to mod the fan controller I'm afraid.

The secondary side with caps removed. From left to right we can see where the 5v, 3.3v, and 12v cap pairs go.

Great pics Wolf:D
Too bad about the fan:(
But who cares, a lack of airflow won't kill it now;)

Any ideas on the grade and the brand of caps your going to use?

I was right, the caps don't look that bad after all:p
Keep up the good work Wolf:beer:

Lots of ideas, but it's proving to be a real bear to pick replacements. They used 10mm diameter only, in values not usually found in 10mm. If JG can't find replacements, I may have to try to get 12.5mm in there any way I can. Shooting for Chemicon KY or Panasonic FM though.
