View Full Version : Baffling HD Power Issue

This is a weird issue so bare with me. I got a used 7200.10 HD and having extremely unusually issues. The HD locks up every few seconds and the OS loses it briefly. I can hear the HD click as the disk heads go back to resting position. After hours of testing, I think I found the issue. It is not the data cables (I've tried 5 different ones). The hard drive SMART data checks out fine and CHKDISK passes.

The hard drive does work... only if it gets a SATA power cable directly to it. When the HD is hooked up on the same power cable as two Raptors, the 7200.10 starts acting weird again. I am running a Seasonic 600w and the rails are look fine with a multimeter. I had a Maxtor running with the Raptors on the same power cable and that worked fine for a year.

It shouldn't be the HD isn't recieving enough power since the HDs are powered in parallel. ...so why would a HD not work when it shares power? I could perhaps run a seperate power line... but it would make my cable management so much harder. I also would like to figure why it does this.

I just got a second hand but brand new 7200.10 750 gig I am paying off. I am not having that issue as I have one other HD on the SATA power connector.

I have to wonder if there is something electrically wrong with the drive that wouldn't show up on a SMART analysis. I'd just send it in for replacement were it me.

I wouldn't really really on SMART though. In the server environment, it only catches around 51% or so of HD failures. I just don't understand electrically what the issue is?

There are reports that Raptors have compatibility problems with certain mobos like Abit IC7 series , IP35-E , Gigabyte GA P35-DS4 etc. You can find more googling. Did you try another SATA connector on the mobo (not different cable, different SATA port on the board) ? But if it's solved by just using another cable (of course I assume that the raptors are also online) just ignore what I've said above.
