Hello
Been lurking around for a bit, trying to get some info on what PSU to get for my new upgrade and I'm still lost so finally I've decided to post and just ask directly.
Here are my specs
AMD x2 3800 (no OC at the moment but plan to get it to 2.5ghz)
Asus A8n e (will be buying this shortly)
2 gigs Corsair ram
2x 250gb WD harddrives (plan to buy a third to dual boot Linux)
M audio Sound card
2x DVDrw drives
and last but not least: 7950gt ( will be ordering shortly)
I currently have an antec true power 430 that needs to be replaced since it only has a 20pin connection and no PCI express connections at all.
What I need is a PSU that can run this rig for under 80 bucks. In my searches here I had decided on getting an enermax liberty 500w PSU but currently its 109.99. If this is a better choice than some cheaper versions, then I might as well just get it, if not please enlighten me. Thanks!

Ok.. So we have an $80 budget.
The Liberty is modular. You pay for that.
Does your PSU have to be modular... or shall I say (since nobody HAS TO HAVE modular) would you prefer modular?

I would love a modular PSU, however, I am the king of Zip ties- so no it needn't be.
Thanks for the prompt reply by the way.
I think for under $80 this is one of the best deals going
Enhance ENP-5150GH 500W - http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=PS-E5150GH
It's Not Modular though

If you really want to go cheap, and not buy a new PSU,
Buy a 20-24 ATX adapter and use the supplied PCI-e-Molex adapter that will come with your 7950GT
That is if your a tightwad with a Truepower 430 Gen1 with dual fans:)

Looks like a good deal. I've never heard of Ewiz till today, any experience with them? In any case all I'm waiting for now is the release of the 8800 series cards and hopefully a price drop on the 7950's.
If there are any other suggestions I am more than open to them, thanks!

I thought about this, but I haven't heard anything good about using the 20-24 adapters. I'd like to save some money but 80 dollars isn't going to break the bank, and I'd rather be safe than sorry no?

Good to see your not a tightwad;)
If you can afford it,upgrade
I was just suggesting that there are other options to consider.
Thats not a "must" considering your CPU and video card options,to replace that PSU.
I ran a 20-24 pin adapter for more then a year with my Truepower 430
running a 3.2E @ 3.4 and a 6800GT@400/1100 and 6x hard drives and other various hardware, now that Truepower is running my Media server with 8x
hard drives and a 2.8B P4. on a MSI 875p Neo:)

Well... if that's the case, maybe I'll be a tightwad this once. Perhaps the thing to do is get the video card and the Motherboard and test it out... I built a friend's PC with the A8N-E and a 20pin PSU and it works just fine... Also the adapter is about 5 dollars...Hmm, decisions, decisions:D

I have no experience with that mobo being run with a 20-24 pin:o
Sounds like you've done your homework on the mobo so.........
If thats the path you want to take,go ahead:)
Trial and error are the only ways to gain experience in this game;)

Thanks for the advice, but I'll play it safe and get a new PSU. No point in throwing caution to the wind for a measly 80 bucks.

So I went ahead and ordered my new video card, motherboard, and PSU, only to have a problem with the order. I ended up cancelling, however zipzoomfly held my funds for the better part of this week...
Long story short, I finally had my funds released and I get a 1600 dollar paycheck tomorrow, so screw it I'm getting an 8800gts.
I wonder if the SILVERSTONE SST-ST50EF would be a good choice or if I should just stick with buying the Enermax Liberty 500w? I'll be buying from Newegg since it seems that smaller places are an order gamble. I read another thread around here where someone was singing the Silverstone's praises.
the Silverstone Zeus ST56ZF is the etasis built and is perfered over the Element/Strider series, from what others are saying
