View Full Version : Video shut down - PSU problem?
While playing World of Warcraft, my video card will just shut down and the system needs a reboot/power off on.
System specs
AMD 3200+ Venice core (oc'd to 2.6)
Gskill 2x1 HZ ram
DFI Lanparty NF4 board
BFG 6800GTOC (not overclocked)
Soundblaster Xtrememusic
OCZ 520 Powerstream
All nestled in a cooler master stacker
I have went through 2 video cards already and don't want to burn another.
Any ideas?

How does the video card "shut down?"
You mean the PC is still on but the display goes black?
Yes, it does. I assume it had a fail safe mode when it over heated or something.
I bought a OCZ Gamexstream 700 to replace the 520, but someone mentioned there was a out of spec ripple. I recently sold it and trying to decide on what I need.
Estasis is looking good at 100 or 120, but maybe I should go for the Corsair 620. I never plan on running SLI, but do plan on upgrading to C2D eventually.

There's only out of spec ripple if you're loading it to 75% and up. I doubt you'd load it up to even half it's capability, even after going SLI.
If you're just looking for PSU recommendations, I'd say the $100 Etasis is a great deal, but I'm not entirely convinced that your video going black is even a PSU issue.
Yea, I am not certain is it either. But 3 video cards can't be bad (RMA'd two times so far).
BFG mentioned I need to update my bios. But for the DFI motherboard, it is/was one of the most stable bios's. Maybe I should do that first before replacing parts.
Oh, I did have a nvidia message pop up the other day after a blackout, saying the video card was not getting enough power. I noticed the LED on the video card was not lit up.
It's all a weird thing.

Do you have the GT OC or GT OC Ultra? If you have the GT OC with one Molex, make sure that Molex isn't hooked up to any other peripherals. If you have the Ultra with two Molexes, you can use one cable for both connectors, but don't hook that up to any other devices. Also make sure your connections are snug and that there's no corrosion or loose pins. Perhaps try a diffferent modular cable to see if the problem goes away.
I've done all that and the 520 Powerstream has the PCI-E connectors. Only thing I could do there is just swap out for the other connector.
And the video card is the GTOC (no ultra).

Here's what I would try and do:
I'd install Riva Tuner or something and *underclock* significantly, your Video RAM to start with, and next your GPU if that doesn't work, and then both to see if that works.
I had an AGP 6800GTOC and it was a terrific card, sold it to someone who is very happy with it, but I put aftermarket cooling on it, an Arctic Cooling setup, the NV Silencer.
If underclocking doesn't help, hmm...
