View Full Version : P4 Fan/Heatsink recommendations?

I'm thinking of trying to extend the life of my current p4 2.4c system by getting a p4 3.0e (oem) and a fan/heatsink combo. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm not overclocking it, if that helps.
I'm thinking of getting this one:

I would get a 3.0C :)
My wife has has my old 3.0C now, after I "upgraded" to a 3.2E my case temps
climbed 10C and my old PSU would not even boot.
the 1mb of L2 on the 3.2E is not that much different from the 512kb L2 on
the 3.0C, reason being, increased L1 pipeline lenth.
Not sure if your a gamer or not,but in games, the 3.0C kicks the snot out of
the 3.2E:p
Now the Presscott was a beast with apps and multitasking.
The Northwoods were always good overclockers too,Presscotts just suck
more juice:p
Northwoods run alot cooler then the Presscotts ,so pretty much anything would work on the Northwood,as for a Presscott? I would either go with a
Zalman or a Thermalright XP-90,
just make sure you have clearence for them:)

XP-90, SI-120 or SI-128
None of the above need more than 50cfm. The SI sinks send cooling air to the RAM and FETs/caps between the CPU & I/O plate. I like the SI sinks ;)

Hey Master,
What chipset are you running? 865PE-875P are a good match for either of those CPU's
Out of personal preference, I think the 875P, running PC-3200 at least
will activate PAT :)
But I'm sure with you running that 2.4C,
your also running 400mhz ram{I hope for your sake or it won't be an upgrade}
Thermalright XP90 with a yate loon D12SL12 120mm fan. Yes, you can mount a 120 onto an xp90. Use the 80mm fan clips on the upper set of holes.
I just installed an X-Wind Copper on my AMD939 setup and its performing better than my generic WC setup does. Its similar to the Zalman other than the fan lays down instead of standing up. Works great in my MicroFly case as well.

I run hi 30's to low 40's.

That Zalman consistently wins almost all comparos, especially when you factor in how quiet it is.
Zalman all the way!
And you can move it to your next rig..

If it were me I'd just upgrade to some PC4400 and buy a better cooling system and OC the snot out of that 2.4C. I've been running my 2.4C at 3.1 to 3.2Ghz for 3 years now and it spanks a Prescott at the same speed handily. That's one hell of a sweet overclocking chip.

SI-120/128 with a Nexus fan or Scythe Ninja/Infinity, TR Ultra-120.

It's a socket 478, the mobo is an MSI 865PE Neo2-LS in a slightly modded Enlight case. I've got 1gb of pc3200 ram. I can't overclock in the slightest. My system is unstable with the least amount of overclocking applied. I can get it up to a 205mhz FSB, but anything else... well, let's just say I run stock. ;)
I chose the 3.0e because it was cheap, supported specifically (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=433&NAME=MS-6728&kind=1) by my motherboard and available at newegg. Didn't do any shopping around. Honestly, though, if I could get a retail intel cpu, I'd probably get that. I've never bought an oem cpu and frankly I'm a bit nervous about it. Still, hard to argue with ~$150 for an extra year of life for my current system vs ~$800 for a new chip, board, ram and gfx card.
I really like that xwind. compact. As for the Zalman, I measured my case last night. I think it'll fit, but I'm a little worried about clearing the NB fan/heatsink which sets between the agp card and the CPU.

Nice mobo:)
I had one just like it,except mine was a Platinum, and the BIOS decided to
take a leave of absence:p
I can't understand why your not able to get it past 205Mhz:confused:
Even with cheap PC-3200, you should be able to hit at least 220Mhz.
You don't have Corecell enabled do you? That will stop your OC.
And make sure your not ovheating the CPU.
is your aim silence? Scythe Ninja/Infinity
slap on 700rpm 120mm fan and enjoy a cool running P4 CPU at below ambient noise levels:)
if you need more options/suggestions, check out my little list;) (http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=389)
