I've spent about 2 weeks on this one, and just don't get it... Your advice is very appreciated. I'm at wits end.
First off, here's the hardware of a new computer I'm trying to get to work:
Vista home premium 32bit (later on xp32)
EVGA 122-CK-NF68-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard
EVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor
SILVERSTONE ST85F ATX12V / EPS12V 850W Power Supply
WD Caviar RE WD5000ABYS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (TLER off)
PNY XLR8 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) x2(4gb total -- was contemplating x64)
Lian Li pc-61b case
Tuniq Tower 120 Cpu Cooler
Most recent driver from evga website (163.11)
3d settings in driver set to off or high performance.
In Vista32 I was getting horrible game performance.. 3dmark scores of 3k. Some games won't even run, HL2 just glitches out completely at the intro menu. Couldn't figure it out. Cleaned Drivers in safe mode, tried 4 different drivers.
Really ripped my hair out on why the card was performing so poorly. Spent 2 long days troubleshooting. Even thought my Tuniq120 was shorting in some weird way, and went back to stock cpu cooling.
Finally installed XP, and after installing the video Driver and rebooting, recieved a Sentinel Message "Your videocard has been underclocked to due to power problems". This message never appeared in vista (Thanks NVIDIA! :@).
Huh? The PSU is rated 30a per 12v rail? Well, I repeated the same driver hula hooping that I did with vista, driver cleaner pro, in safe mode, different versions, etc. Still no luck. I then did all combinations of power I could think of, using the molex adapter, using the native 12v line, using modular 12v line... I spoke with the vendor, and they told me to RMA the video card, thinking that was the culprit, wait 4 days, the new card has arrived, and guess what, same message.
Well, I did some more research, and discovered that there was a problem with some st85f Silverstone PSU's (http://forums.slizone.com/lofiversion/index.php?t3475.html).... So I RMA'd the PSU, and drove down to the local computer shop, and picked up a Antec quattro 850w. (Reviewed with details here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=120)
Still the same message. I've just finished doing the power cable hoopla, testing all combinations of molex, native, and modular cables to the card.
The Quattro is rated at 18amps on the 12v lines.. Even with 30% loss, two seperate rails should be delivering 30amps... which is the recommended amount of power... (as I've been doing research someone said that you can have up to 30% loss on the 12v rails).
I don't know alot about power/electricity.
Does this power supply not have enough to run this card?
Could not enough amps on the house circuit be causing a problem (another computer is also on this same circuit) or maybe that this computer is running through a UPS?
How can I see more detail on what is happening? Are there any power meters like there are CPUZ/rivatuner?
Is there anything the community can recommend me to try?
I'm running out of time on my 30 day, and I'm just not able to get this card running fullspeed.
I've now fully exhausted everything I could think of.
As I said, your advice/guidance is needed, and very appreciated.
Thanks.
