Hi anyone here opens the pcb of the hdd before. I want to know what is this blue thin sponge at the back of the hdd. Underneath the pcb. This is the first time I ever seen a thin sponge underneath the hdd pcb.

Recently I purchased a second hand (used) hdd from a seller. Before using it, I ran Hdtune's error scan to check for damage/bad sector, the temperature of the hdd rose 55C. Hdtune warned me of the hdd temperature. I stopped the error scan as the temerature will keep climbing further if i continue the full scan. Whatever reason the manufacturer placed the blue thin sponge behind the pcb to reduce noise or vibration or shock, I am thinking this blue sponge is hindering the dissipate of heat which make the hdd rather hot.

The heat measured by SMART isn't the PCB heat. It's motor heat. HDD's IC's and PCB's don't normally get that hot.

The "sponge" is actually required to keep the back side of the PCB from shorting out on the HDD housing. Don't remove it.

Hi thanks for replying. I almost wanted to open up and remove the sponge. But i felt, i better check with you guys first as I had difficulty getting the answer when i google for the information on this "sponge" behind hdd pcb. Ok, I will leave the blue sponge alone and find other ways to improve the heat dissipation of the hdd.

Really appreciate your advice. :)
