View Full Version : silent PSU
I had Seasonic SII-12 430W which I've removed becouse I had some high frequency buzz so now I have to buy new PSU.
conf:
DFI Infinity UltraII-M2
HR-05 SLI with sharkoon 80mm at 1000rpm
AMD 3600+ X2 Brisbane (OC 2500mhz-2800mhz)
Scythe Ninja rev B (500-750rpm)
2x1gb Crucial Ballistix DDR667 @ 1000
Gainward 7600gt passive
HDD WD 320gb AAKS
This system is virtualy not audible.
Only thing which I expect from PSU is silence not power(coz this configuration is not really power demanding)
Brands which I can buy at my stores are:
Be Quite
Fortron
Chieftec
Raptoxx
Antec
Tagan
Silverstone
Hiper
Enermax
Coolermaster
Levicom
Sharkoon
Thermaltake
Zalman
Xilence
Seasonic (but only SII, old S12 are only 500W and pretty expensive/overkill for my configuration)
Corsair (pretty too expensive)
Maybe I've forgot some brands but this is mostly everything.
Models I think of are are silverstone element 500W/antec earthwats 500w/tagan easycon 430w.
Like I said, silence is what Im looking for

RMA the Seasonic for one that doesn't buzz?
They don't normally buzz.
Or is it already out of warranty?
I have RMA it for HDD becouse I've read on "silentpcreview.com" forum that alot of people had that buzz problem so I didn't want to risk again...
here is that thread about buzz (5 pages :/... not only seasonic but other brands which are made by seasonic, like corsair and antec...))

EDIT:
1 guy from "my" forum is willing to give me his easycon 430W for 80$ (8 months old)... is it a good deal or I shell buy something else... if there is anything quieter? (I was looking at tagans site and it sais that its 22db till 60% load)
You never mentioned a budget, but I see you listed one on SPCR so that rules out my Zen 400 recommendation.

Zen is too expensive... it cost 115 Euro (160$) while I don't want to give more then 80 Euro (115$) for PSU...
I can give, but I think that its stupid to put so much money for PSU while my machine can work even with Codgen 400W (bad... 16A@12V) which is in use atm...
I was even thinking of modding (fan swap) new PSU which I will buy, but Im afraid of losing warranty and chosing the right PSU model for modding

Well, the buzz can only come from so many components
Prime suspect would be the coils, so if you feel up to it use something non conductive like a plastic stick and poke a bit on the coils with the PSU running (taking god damn care to not touch anything, the heatsinks are probably live at 120v AC!!!!!)
When/if you find the culprit take out your hot glue gun and give it a dab or use nail polish
The noise is caused by the thing inside the coil moving around thus creating that buzzing noise...
But again:
BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WHEN WORKING WITH LIVE HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRONICS, THEY ARE QUITE CAPABLE OF KILLING 'YO ASS DEAD INDEED!!!
I don't have seasonic anymore... I don't have any PSU atm...
I will probobly buy corsair hx520 or some less expensive PSU which is capable of fan swaping.
Which PSU would be good for fan swap?
I got Xilence 120mm red wing, 1400rpm, 68cfm, 21.2db (this probobly isn't true becouse 21db are usualy 700/800rpm 120mm fans...) which starts at 6V.
And it would be good if PSU don't have a stick which have to be removed so PSU can be opened (I remember my old Fortron 350W PNF didn't have "warranty void if removed" stick on the place where PSU is being opened but near).
can any1 help me pls about this decision?

Maybe try the Corsair before swapping the fan?

Hmm... Yes indeedy.
that's a scary thing to read under any circumstance
Im not sure if you know what I've wanted to say.
I ment that its stupid for me to put 100Euro in PSU while any PSU over 30Euro can work fine with my machine...
I didn't want to say that all expensive PSUs are "stupid choice" to buy.

Aren't DFI boards a little picky about their PSU's.....isn't there something about problems with the amps on the +5VSB ?
Probably dreaming it...........:D

Read the power supply threads in the DIY forum. Yeah, there are some issues, I haven't read enough about it though. The DFI LP boards are really power hungry, I have the LP (UT) nF4 SLI-DR. I had trouble with two Antec supplies of 430 watts each before getting this Enermax, I don't know if it was because of that or what, but two in a row makes me wonder...
