View Full Version : I want to have some extra power just in case but not overkill due to ignorance

Hi Jonny,
I'm planning on setting up a platform in the near future (these week :) ):
Core2extreme 2.6 (will OC to 2.93)
4GB DDR2
Only 1 HD 500GB 7200
And 4 80mm LED fans and 2 120mm LED fans.

For now I'm buying a cheap gfx card but I'm planning on going a bit crazy later on (around christmas) and get a really high end card (8800GTX or Ultra). I don't plan on doing SLI though.

My concern is that gfx cards seem to ask for more and more amps instead of getting more efficient and I don't want to end up buying something that I'll have to change later because it's too weak (supposedly GTX/ultras ask for more than 21amps, from what I've read). I want to have some extra power just in case but not overkill due to ignorance.

Is the OP750 too much? I read your review and it looked really good( liked the 60amps on single rail). On the other hand the OCz GameXtreme 700 is really cheap right now on newegg ($104) but you mentioned it had visible ripple levels. That's 55 bucks I could save for my video card later. Should I be concern of the ripples that much (as to ignore the price difference)? Am I overkilling by going 700+ watts? Sorry for so many questions.

Where did that quote come from? Just about everything mentioned in that quote is the opposite of the real world.

As for the OP there really is no such thing as too much. Its good to be ready for future upgrades. Personaly i thing the OP750 is an excelent choice. Plenty of power and it gives you an 8-pin PCI-e power connector. It will keep you ready for a future GPU upgrade.

It's his sig. It's "irony." ;)

Correct. Unless of course you're operating below where the power supply's efficiency curve starts to curve up. But if you get something and you're only using 25% or better of it's capability, you're golden. :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciated.

I noticed that some people were getting the wrong 8pin cable on the OP750, and some strange noise, but supposedly this was being fixed on a new batch. Is there a revision number I should check for? Or is this not an issue any more?

You need to make sure you have a rev 1.5 or rev 2.5.

Rev 1.0 or 2.0 will have the wrong 8-pin.

Is there any online vendor that would let you request a specific revision (1.5 or 2.5), or that you guys know is already shipping the newer revs? I'm planning in buying from newegg, but they can't tell what revision they'll send. If you guys know of other reputable vendors, I'll appreciate recommendations.

I've also heard many forum members mentioning deadeyedata. They seem very responsive with their clients. Any feedback on them?

Well, it's done. Just ordered the op750 from deadeye. Jennifer was lighting fast replying to my email with regards to rev 2.5 (that's the rev they are shipping now).

Thanks guys, for all your help. I really appreciate your support.
