I have read most of the posts on this board, and have read the FAQ's and stickies but don't have an answer to my question.

My system is this:
Intel 975 Bad Axe 2
E6600@3.2ghz
4 1gb PC1066 ram sticks
ATI 2900HD
Promise EX8350 SATA Raid controller (which gets really hot so I assume it uses some juice)
2 WD raptor 150's
5 400gb SATA 7200 RPM drives
2 DVD burners
2 1GB ethernet
1 Soundblaster X-fi
4 line VFD display
1 E-mu PCI 1616 audio system
5 120mm Fans
1 floppy drive
Currently an Antec Phantom 500 PS

As soon as I start a game and the video card fan starts to spin, the +5 and +12 volt rails go off. The system worked fine until I upgraded the video card from an X850XT PE.

I did one of the online calculators - it said I need 921 watts, which I think is overkill.

I am looking for a quiet power supply that will not be responsible for cooling the case (P180) and will run 24/7 for many years. Oh and it has to be cheap. By cheap I mean that I don't really want to spend $300 on a power supply, but if I have to I will.

The machine spends a good amount of time almost idle, but I do music and movie production on it and it will frequently run overnight with the CPU maxed. I don't play games very often, but sometimes.

The X3 ultra is out of my price range. I am almost leaning toward the Antec TPQ 850 if the reviews look ok. I have had good luck with Antec except for one Cap explosion, and a Smartpower which squeals. They all ran 24/7 for years before letting go though and never damaged my equipment.

I like the looks of the Enermax Galaxy 850, but don't know much about it.

Ideally my new power supply would have the 8 pin PCI connector for the 2900

Thoughts?

the 1kw Silverstone Strider is quiet, modular and can be had for just over 200 bucks. jonny gave the 850w version a 7.5.

You certainly don't need "921W" even with the 2900, but that Antec has to go.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any"fanless" PSU's for your rig. Maybe something with a > 120MM fan that's > 600W?

Yeah - I don't care about fanless. The idea was nice, but then I had to put a 120mm fan in the chamber to move air over it and 4 of the hard drives anyway.

What I would be looking for is something relatively quiet. I just put a Silverstone SST-ST56ZF (I think) in a friends machine. It makes more noise than all my other fans combined. The machine is used as a HTPC as well as being a media server to other machines in the house - but it lives under the TV so the quieter the better.

I beleive the HX620 would power your rig but that doesnt have a 8 pin connector for your card so an adapter would still be required.

I use a Seasonic M12-700 and have never heard the thing but I don't know how sensitive your ears are. And an adapter would still be required.

I ordered an Enermax Galaxy 850. We'll see what happens.

They seem to be well recieved. I know Jonny had some concerns about regulation, and silentPC said it wasn't very silent - but it seemed like a good choice. Hopefully it will fit in my case.

I didn't realize the Ultra's were available for less money. I guess I should have looked at the specials before I ordered the Enermax.
