View Full Version : Some real R600 pics...

I received a couple R600's today.

Unfortunately, all of my motherboards have Nvidia chipsets so I won't be doing Crossfire with them any time soon.

But that's ok... this isn't a video card review site and I know better than to try to show how "lame" a new video card is without final drivers and proper DX10 benchmarks to run on it.

I just thought it would be neat to share some pics. Yeah... yeah.. they're all over the web now. But these are MY pics. :D

I might pop one in one of my daily drivers just to see how it does against the 8800GTX card.

In the first couple pics, I put the R600 next to one of my 8800GTX cards to show that the ATI is smaller, but the ATI is still heavier. This is because of the heatspreader on the back side of the card for the memory (I removed the heat plate in the third photo) and the case aluminum heatspreader on the front that is much thicker than the Nvidia card's. There are also more heatpipes on the ATI card.

More pics of the card with the heatsinks removed..

That is one large core.

That's ok, I doubt that many people will ever run something like that... Although would be interesting to know the total power consumption such system would produce :D

There's no such thing and I'm afraid won't be for a long time, so don't think about it :D

That would be most interesting... Although I'm not sure whether there's still some kind of NDA in effect  At any rate, I'd really like to see some results, especially if you would try doing that in Vista (though I doubt it). Just don't forget to use latest drivers for Nvidia cards (I think it's 158.22 for Nvidia and Windows XP; there are some 160.xx drivers also available but they don't increase performance for me and produce pretty bad artifacts in Oblivion).

is that an all-copper cooler on the r600?

jonnyGURU

Yeah. The core is copper and that's what the heatpipes are attached to. Then those are attached to copper radiators.

The part that goes over the RAM on the front is a cast aluminum and the heat spreader that goes on the back is also aluminum, but I don't think it's cast. More like rolled.

I think the nagging question is:

What is the power consumption?

Oh... I forgot to mention the whole reason I took the close up shot of the GPU...

Look at the PCB around the GPU. It says "HINGE" and "LATCH" as if it were made to use with a ZIF socket! Wouldn't that be hot? Video cards with ZIF sockets and interchangeable GPU's? ;)

That would be cool and there's been talk of it on both sides of the GPU fence but I doubt it'll ever happen.

I see your camera in the core... hey you could start a "Guess the camera contest" or not.

nice camera, mind if we try to guess which one it is and maybe the winner gets your RD600 ? ^___^

EDIT: ROFL Madmat beat me up to it !

Come on then, tell us about the power consumption.

Or are you under NDA?

Or, if you were under NDA, would the NDA prevent you from telling anybody that you were under NDA?

i dont think he is under nda, otherwise it would have prevented him from posting the pic.

I just don't have time right now. :)

I'll do it this next week, though.

Oh... as far as NDA goes.... I think there's a bit of a difference between NDA and embargo. These cards are in the hands of most of the distys and retailers. But there's an embargo that expires when the NDA expires that prevents resellers from listing the product. I got these from one of my suppliers. What's funny is I asked my contact at AMD/ATI for "samples" and they ignored my email. If I did receive a "sample" I would have to sign an NDA. :D
