An unusual announcement came out of IDF today about Intel’s upcoming Skulltrail platform. Skulltrail is effectively a competitor to AMD’s Quad FX platform, it is a dual socket motherboard capable of supporting two quad-core CPUs. Intel lists Skulltrail has having support for “four PCI Express slots”, which we can only assume means four PCIe x16 slots.

Although they didn't state whether the dual socket board would support socket 775 or 771 or both, since it has the quad PEG slots it's gotta be an enthusiast board, meaning LGA775 ;)
40% increase in performance in gaming I definately believe. It makes sense though, the QX6700 can't fully utilize 8800GTX's in SLI ;)

LGA775 socket was never designed for SMP in mind so im doughting it will be LGA775. im putting my money on LGA771 or another socked for the server segment.
I guess this means socket 771 CPUs with unregistered DDR RAM. Aka they made a new Northbridge for non-FBDIMM modules.
Sounds interesting I'd say. FB-DIMMs are the biggest issue with Woodcrest and Clovertown right now.

Ah, with a quad I could do 4 concurrent distributed computer projects, Folding at home, TSC, BOINC, and maybe SETI. That would be awesome, but a dual quad core and double that work? That would be amazing, but woa would it need quite the power supply, especially if it used quad PCI Express 16x. You'd almost have to run a new electrical circuit in the house just for the computer...

It's actually pretty damn efficient. Even the Kentsfield cpu's right now are pretty energy efficient. The quad father is the power whore ;)
