I just got a Zalman ZM600 psu and on a main cable coming out of the PSU (non modular) it has a 20/24 EATX mainboard connector that is separated into one 20 pin and one 4 pin connector. There's a yellow warning label on the separated 4 pin part of the mainboard connector that states "Warning do not connect this cable with the 4 pin ATX 12V connector. Doing so can damage the motherboard and CPU". On another main cable (non modular) it has two separated 4 pin ATX connectors labelled CPU 1 power connector. I have an ASUS Crosshair mobo that has a 24 pin mainboard connector and a 4 pin labelled ATX 12V 1.

I connecrted the 20 pin mainboard connector to the mainboard socket and connected the 4 pin CPU 1 connector to the ATX 12V connector, and left the other 4 pins of the 24 on the mainboard connector hanging out in the breeze. IS THIS CORRECT?? It just looks funny with 4 of the 24 pins on the mainboard socket just sitting there vacant....??

NO!

When they say NOT to hook the +4 up to the ATX12V connector, they're just telling you not to use it in the 4-pin CPU power connector and to use the 4-pin meant for that connector.

See, the extra 4 pins on a 24-pin are one 3.3V, 5V, 12V and ground. The 4-pin that supplies power to the CPU is two 12V and two ground.

See, they want to make sure you don't plug the extra 4 pins of the 24 pin connector into that other interface because you could seriously screw things up.

You have a 4 pin ATX12V. You know where it goes. So take the 20 and the 4, combine them, make a 24-pin and plug it in where it belongs.

OK! Thanks a lot! It would help if ASUS and Zalman used the same naming terminology on their sockets and cables!

One more question! I noticed that the 4 pin 12V CPU socket on the Crossfire is actually an 8 pin socket with a black plug over 4 of the pins. Does this mean that I only have to use one of the the ATX 4 pin CPU 1 cable connectors? Or should the cover be taken off and the two 4 pin connectors be combined and plugged in?....

They do that so if the only connector you have on the PSU is a 4-pin, you know what four pins to hook up.

If your PSU has an 8-pin, you're supposed to pop out the plastic piece and plug in the 8-pin.
