What's with the naming of these new Intel procs? Shouldn't a Core2Duo be a quad core and Core2Quad be an 8 core?

Why would they call a 2-core CPU a Quad?
A "little" nonsense? :p

Core squared duo and core squared quad. I can see his point.

Core squared duo and core squared quad. I can see his point.

Using that geek reasoning:

Core2Duo
Core (=1)
Squared (=1)
Duo - (=2), x Core squared (1) = 2 cores.

Core2Quad
Core (=1)
Squared (=1)
Quad - (=4), x Core squared (1) = 4 cores.

Yeah, but....the flip side is:

Core2 = 2 X core

Duo = 2

Core2 = 2 + Duo = 2

2 + 2 = ....errm...don't tell me...ehhhhhhh...let me get my tongue in the proper upper part of my mouth.... 3! :D

The "duo"/"quad" is a cardinal, while the "2" is an ordinal. "Core", with a capital "C", is the trademarked name given to this chip family. "Core 2" is the second iteration of that architecture.

Thus, "Core 2 Duo" means "the dual-cored implementation of the second iteration of the architecture known as 'Core'". "Core 2 quad" is the quad-core version of the second implementation, etc.

The original "Core" architecture (what one might, with hindsight, call "Core 1") didn't make too much of an impact as it was limited to laptops. Core 2 is the desktop/server version.

In case nobody figured it out, the "nonsense" refers to me and the subject of this thread. It isn't meant to reference the Intel processor name as nonsense.:)

Are you refering to Core Solo?
