Don't cheat! If you do, its pointless. No tricks here.

Read the sentence below and count the F's in that sentence. Count them ONLY ONCE. Do not go back and count them again. Submit your first count.

Five?

I'm scared... what's the trick?

Six ;)

Five.
Then I cheated, and now I agree with Oklahoma Wolf.

I think those of us brazen enough to cheat should deserve some extra consideration.

Cheat? Me? Never

The trick is, the brain sees the words and not the individual letters. I'm a novelist, so I'm kind of in the habit of being picky with the written word ;)

Hmmm...

Yeah. I missed one of the "F's" in one of the "OF's."

Does it matter if I have done it before? :D

Gosh you all fell for it!

I'm where yesterday follows today, and tomorrow's in the middle. ;)

All?

So it's not six either?

madmat

If it was on the up and up yes, there are six "F"'s in that sentence. I know because I copied it into notepad and did a "find" in there to see for certain. I counted exactly six so yes, there's some trick to it.

Like madmat said.
If you are smart enough to use wordpad I think that counts the same as actually being a "genius".
An evil genius maybe, but a genius none-the-less.

Yeah I've been having problems connecting to the site :(

The trick is, that you fell for a trick that didn't exist :D

All it means is that..

You all read too fast and miss the main bits. SLOW down!!

Only kidding.

Its not an "IQ" nor "intelligence" test. Some read letter by letter some skip to find useful words only and others only need the first and last letter of the word to know what it is and move on.

If you read it once you can get varying answers. Why?

The human brain categorizes "OF" as "OV" and misses the "F" in this word, if you read at normal speed without looking back. There's always exceptions, usually with writers, avid readers and people like me who generally read slow, letter for letter :o

The answer is 6 FWIW.

Nice one guys ;)

Want me to set another one a little trickier?

42 FTW!

Why did you need Wordpad, Matt? Ctrl+F and searcihng for case sensitive "F's" (the sentence is in all caps) works pretty well. :D

I just wanted to remove any variables. I'd counted 6 at the beginning but I was tired and I had (and still have) grinding grit in my eye so I wasn't sure if I missed anything.

BTW, grinding grit in your eye is slightly bothersome.

I read it once - the answer was six. The first time I saw this. This time, my memory gave me the answer before I got two words into it :p

Heh - whenever I cheat on these kinds of puzzles it's always memory related. Used to wallop my uncles and aunts playing Concentration with them as a kid. One uncle wouldn't give up until I won 4 games against him in a row ;)
