View Full Version : High pitched whine from Corsair HX 620W
Hi guys. Had this PSU just over 2 weeks, and ive just noticed, that it emites a high pitched whine in certain games and certain things.
It does it the most that ive noticed on the DOW:Dark Crusade loading screen and in nature on 3dmark 01. You can clearly hear it, it's louder when you put ya head behind the case, it must be the PSU. It's not as bad when playing games, but it's still there.
Is this a bad fan? what should i do?

dunno much about noisy psu's, the only moving part is the fan, so its logical to assume, but also, your case could be amplifying the noise, and resonating along with it, so tighten the screws a bit, and possibly a case change, too
under warrantee? cover a noisy fan? then return it. if not, change the fan
I have had pcb/s arcing which caused a transformer to physically squeal but I doubt its anything like that.
put your head/ear near the fan when its under load, careful with loose things like hair and chains, it may not be the psu, tho', if the case is in a corner its strange how sound can travel/be amplified, but if it was silent before....???probably is

Make sure its not your 8800GTX card.
Here is a list of resources to look into if you think it may be your video card.

THE ACTUAL NOISE (this seems a little loud... but maybe it was recorded right next to the "noise source." My noise isn't this loud but sounds like this.)

The noise is no-where near the video card.
Found this audio file. It's pretty much the same as this, this is not my recording btw:

If you have this problem, feel free to use our TSXPress Online (http://tsxpress.corsairmemory.com/) program to set up an RMA. The PSU should not be making a whine at all, so if it is, feel free to sign up for an RMA of the unit.
Usually it is an internal component resonating that makes the noise.

Welcome Redbeard, nice to have a rep here :)
I've heard of this problem before with 8800GTX in SLI quite a few times as well as "no post" issue with the 520/620 units. Each time it was an RMA and it was resolved with the next unit supplied.

Thank you. Iam returning the product where i bought it from (in the uk), because it will cost me a fortune to send it to the US.
On a side note, OCZ are sending me a 700W Gamexstream, to replace my old 520W Powerstream, that blew up, so thats a pretty sweet deal. The question is which do i keep? I imagine the corsair is better?
I imagine the corsair is better?Yes ;)
