This might seem a weird question, but here goes anyway. I'm gonna be upgrading my pc slowly over the next few months and first port of call will be the mobo + cpu. My current cpu is a sempron 2400@2ghz and I was wondering. Starting with the cheapest socket 775 cpu (celeron 326) and working up in price, which is the cheapest cpu that would outperform my current one? Just assume that everything else in the system will remain the same. It's a question I've been trying to answer myself, but I can't seem to find any review providing that sort of comparison.
edit - I had assumed the celerons would all be slower so was eyeballing the pentium 531 as the likely target (it is only £3 more than the 524).

Stay away from those Celeron D's
Your also looking at more heat plus wattage usage from that Presscott core and 775 mobo.
Why not go with a cheap 939 NF4 and X2 combo?

That's definitely something I've considered. Ideally I wanted to buy a c2d e6300 but I figure I will get more of an improvement by buying a cheaper cpu and upgrading my gfx card at the same time. That's why I've been trying to find out what would be enough to outperform my sempron, as I don't want to spend money and see a drop in performance.

Any of the X2's will walk the dog on your Sempron:p
Try out the 3800X2,nice and cheap clocked at 2000Mhz
easy enough to OC to 2.6 depending on your memory and mobo:)

Socket 939? That's a wasted investment.
Save your pennies, and get an E6300 ($190.00)
OR - Get a P4 531 for now, and you can upgrade your CPU later. (make sure the mobo is Core2Duo compatible) Socket939 is dead, and I doubt you will be able to find an upgrade if/when you want to go above the 3800. One thing with teh AMD is you can use your old DDR, any decent S775 C2d compatible board is going to run DDR2, not a cheap thing right now.
Or get a PentiumD 805 and clock the piss out of it. :p

The whole point was better performance for cheap without having to spend
$190 on a C2D and $250 on memory
It's apparent the OP is a slow upgrader, and not looking for max performance and your telling me that he wont be able to find anything better then a
3800X2 a year or two from now? If that was the fact, you wouldent be able to find any P4 Northwoods still in the box at Bestbuy and
CompUSA!
