View Full Version : Is this a PSU issue?

PC Spec:
Asus P5W64 WS Pro / E6600 @ 3.5GHz / 4 x 1GB OCZ PC6400 / 8800GTX / X-Fi Fatal1ty / Areca 1210 / 6 SATA HDDs / 1 Optical / 4 case fans

I recently started getting issues with my PC. It started to refuse to turn on a lot of the time, requiring me to pull the power cord and wait 5-10 sec before plugging it back in and booting up.

This was with a Hiper Type-R 580w modular PSU. The issue only happened after switching 2 x X1950s in crossfire for the single 8800GTX and assumed that the new card had pushed the PSU over its limits. I then replaced the PSU with the new 730W Hiper modular.

The "refusing to start" issue cleared immediately (also to note, the 580w completely died a few days later after being installed into another PC) but the PC now developed a spontaneous reboot issue....

So, after over 4 months of running a high, stable overclock (running 9 x 390) I have had to drop the speed to default (9 x 266, even 9 x 333 is rebooting occasionally), this SEEMS to have solved the reboots but as I have changed nothing at all but the PSU, I am a little weary of the PSU causing the issue....it does not have an 8 pin CPU connection (only the 4pin) and I have had various people tell me that the Hiper PSUs "aren't all that great"....

So, the million dollar question: Do you think this is a PSU issue? Is there any tests (other then shelling out for yet another PSU...) that I can do to help identify if it is or not?

Any help would be most appreciated :)

Why Hiper? Again...
but the PC now developed a spontaneous reboot issue....
Uncheck Automatically restart and tell us what's written on BSOD.

Also you can measure voltages with a multimeter.

Do you think this is a PSU issue? No, the 730W is a server based unit & has enough juice for your PC.

It is unchecked, there is no BSOD, nothing in the eventlog either other then "the previous shutdown was unexpected"

You also talk like you do not rate the Hiper kit, may I ask why? I am currently swung between a new motherboard or a new PSU to solve this issue as I have pretty much exhusted all other possabilities, so any experience you have had with them could be a valuable to my decision :)

I don't know about 730W Hiper, but in our forums I saw people not very happy with their under 500W Hiper units.
In fact for your setup a good 500W PSU is enough.
At first look it seems that it's a MB problem.

8 out of 10 times if the "automatically restart" box is unchecked and the PC randomly reboots, I've found that the problem is BAD MEMORY and not a PSU or motherboard.

Theres too much yet untested to determine anything conclusively..

I would run Memtest86: http://www.memtest86.com/ to test your RAM primarily. If you get any errors, check with each stick individually and swap slots to see if a slot isn't defective.
Check your temperatures, sudden shut down is usually temp related. Some software like Core Temp is very accurate.
Check your HDDs with HDD diagnostic tools.
It maybe your NB overheating over time, but don't forget OC requires HIGHER power consumption and the Areca controller makes me think you have a RAID setup?? At spinup the amount of power drained by your drives and CPU is much and I'd be using something like a very good 650W for security.. but the 730W is more than enough, I also use it in a CF system, so I'm doubting its that. Make sure to check your voltages though, as burebista said, it could be anything.

You probably are not running Vista... but it has a built-in memory tester. However, I'm not sure if its any good.

Just to update, it was the PSU.....Swapped it for a Seasonic M12-700 and everything is sweet again.

Hasn't left me with a great impression of Hiper.

Good PSU, I love my M12-700... buzzes a little on low load. But thats less then 10w load so I am not too worried ;)
