View Full Version : DA750 vs ST85F

Trying to choose between DA750 and ST85F. In light of the resent review (http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1434) and the single rail on the DA750 I am really leaning towards the DA750. What do you think?

depends on your power needs. You might be able to get away with the little brother of the DA750.
Either way, the ST85F doesn't seem like a good choice. On that we can agree. :p

I want a little head room to grow. I have water for the gpu and phase for my cpu in my u2-ufo, and while my current goal is an overclocked C2C and an R600 card, in the near future I might upgrade to another R600 card and crossfire, and maybe a quad core cpu.
DA750 seems like a great psu and I just wanted to get the green light from you guys in case there is something wrong with it I don't know or something significantly better out there.
thanks for the input.

Damn... sounds like you're plugging in a lot of juicy hardware. I don't know if I'd be off in doing so, but I'd recommend something a little higher up than a 750 watt PSU if you're going to crossfire an R600.

DA750, but if considering R600 SLI, it might be wise to wait. ;)
epion2985
03-06-2007, 04:14 AM
Wait for what? Is there something nice on the way?
the DA750 has 60a on the 12v rail. About 220w for cpu and 250w for each card, seems like enough. 850w would be nice, but where do you get a quiet, single rail, psu with good regulation and low ripple

Why would you consider the ST85F if the DA750 is a possible contender?
Did I miss that part?
It's not like you NEED an 850W... even with the potential of R600 Crossfire.

Well PaulTa above thinks 750w is not quite enough :)

I'm probably wrong... but isn't the DA750 going to be a modular version of the OP750?
I am also holding out for the DA750. I think it was Jonny's glowing review of the OP650 that lead me to setting my sites on the DA750. I've been checking newegg.com daily (yes, slightly obsessive).

I'm still reading that part about 'never became audible from the front of the case'. Is it possible that you received a defective unit from SS? I want to believe that it's possible to make a quiet, air-cooled 850W PSU that doesn't suck.

Nope. Not defective.
I got an email from Silverstone with a test report from a Chroma attached. They loaded all of the rails the same percentage across the board as per the ATX12V specification, which means there was an unusually high 3.3V and 5V load (unusual as in; not consistant with a modern PC. See dragged out discussion at [H] for more details) and a +12V that could not be loaded to it's maximum without overloading the PSU's total wattage capability. DESPITE THIS ADVANTAGE, the PSU still dropped .19V on the +12V2 which would still be a two point penalty even if the PSU had it's +12V loaded all of the way up.

Well for crap's sake, if the voltage were better regulated, I'd've bought this PSU already. I guess you need to get cracking on a review of the DA750 - maybe somehow the fan got quieter.

I'm definitely partial to Newegg.com. One, we are both in California so I get almost everything next day even with ground shipping. Two, they are the best! I can wait an extra week if I have too... plus, maybe there will be a few reviews by that time.

That's too bad.
They're the best? Sorry... I really don't see them doing anything more than almost anyone else I've used, and Newegg is typically more expensive. :(
ZipZoomFly and xPCgear are also in California and both have fantastic service and low prices.
DeadeyeData drop ships, so even though they're not in California, they drop ship from SilverStone's warehouse in California so you'd still get your product the next day.

I still don't know if 60a on 12v rail is enough for dual r600's and a nice QX6700. Maybe at stock speeds but I plan to oc everything heavily. Phase change on cpu and water on gpu's so I don't know.
I wish the ST85F wasn't such a piece of crap and wish it was single rail. Are they going to make a DA850 to follow up the DA750?

Ya that might push it but im just running a C2D, with plans to go to quad when they lower the power consumption a bit more. Then again at least for me I don't plan to jump on a crossfire or even a SLI setup depending which route I go, right away.

I don't think so. ST85F is pretty crappy in light of recent review by jonny. Voltage regulation is poor it seems.

Not even close. Being impatient, I got the ST85F before the reviews came out. I thought it would be good being a Silverstone and I wanted to give a modular a try. Johnny's review just confirms what I have found using my highly sophisticated $20 Radio Shack multimeter. The +12v2 rail (4pin cpu connector) would drop to 11.71 just running prime95. Forget about upping the vcore to do any decent OC'g.

oh wow. I doubt it is just you that got this bad cable. I would think a whole batch of these got out the door like this and they are following up with who gets one of these mishaps. I hope the units coming to Canada on Monday aren't like this. If you can take a picture of what you got and what they send you as a replacement so we can see what a proper cable should like versus a bunk one. I'm sure many would appreciate this as you are the guinea pig for this unit lol.

I -should- receive the replacement cables today. At least I hope. It killed me to have the new PSU sitting on my counter and not be able to install it.
I looked at the SATA power cables that came with it. At first glance, they looked like the standard 15pin SATA Power connector. I'll definitely take photos of the connectors. Heck, I'll photograph the whole "unboxing" of the DA750.
Regarding the shipment to Canada... I wouldn't really worry about it... Silverstone seems VERY proactive.
EDIT: I started a new thread (http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14948)to document my experience and post "unboxing" photos and photos of old/new SATA power cables.
