I don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that the solid capacitors are far more effective at smoothing the ripple on psu lines, to the extent that you only need a value of around 1/10 a standard electrolytic capacitor.
Has anyone else heard that?

Polymer caps have their benefits and drawbacks. In a computer PSU, cost is one of them assuming one can even find them in sizes able to filter a good size PSU. They make more sense used on a mainboard's VRM.
