Just picked up M12 700W and have G80 concerns

Hi,
First post in these forums. In fact after buying the Seasonic M12 700w after my mate recommended it, I discovered this site and read the review with great interest.

I am currently running a 7950gx2/core2extreme rig and am planning to get a G80 sli setup next month. Am really hoping that thesr rumours of 800w+ for the psu requirements are not true.

Does anyone think I will be safe with the Seasonic M12 ?

Current rig is as follows :

Current rig is fine with it. We don't know exactly how much power you will need for highend SLi DX10 (next gen/wave). Just keep it and if needed you can purchase a second PSU to mount in your 5.25" bay (Fortron, etc).

Yeah...no problem running my rig at all with current psu, even quad sli would be fine (according to seasonic).

However if it came to adding another pcu, I have a CM stacker I never used, so could also consider a 2nd Seasonic M12 if it came to it. The stacker even came with a cable to allow turning on both psu's.

Is there any risk with having 2 psu's though ? Specifically with 2 Seasonic M12's - would you have to blalance what is connected to each psu in order to insure a minimum load so each psu would start. I remember the Antec NeoHE's had this "feature". Also, the Seasonic M12 according to the review get's loud over 400w load. So by splitting the load over both psu's I think that could potentially keep noise down.

So for example :

PSU1 - cpu, motherboard, 2 opticals, 1st DX10 card
PSU2 - 1 hard drive, 3 or 4 120mm ans, 2nd DX10 Card

Worst case scenario you can get a 5.25" bay PSU too. Just one of those can easily handle a G80 card or two if the rumored power requirements are correct.

Cheers. Will hold off then. Going by past experience the etailors in Ireland/UK will be gouging on the G80 price so may only end up getting one anyway.

Also I find it very hard to believe that 450w is required for a typical gamers rig with 1xg80, and that requirement doubles with 2xg80's.

Exactly. A second GPU isn't even going to double the power requirement of the first, never mind the power requirement of the entire PC. It's got to be B.S.

I guess we will know the first week in November. I have not seen anything official about psu requirements, just what was seen in Dailytech.

<edit>I just found out my local PC store is stocking the Thermaltake 5.25" Purepower Power Express 250W SLI Dedicated Power Supply. In fact they have them priced wrong and are selling them for around 20euro ($30). Think I will pick one up today. Worst case scenario I bring it back unopened next month if the Seasonic manages to do G80 sli. I assume something like this could power one G80 ?</edit>

Frozencpu has them in stock for $50 as well...might be quicker to source them there :) quicker shipping and all that.

Hmmm....it looks like these thermaltakes do 250w, and are designed for sli with 2 pci-e cables, each one getting a dedicated 12v rail with a total max load of 21A and peak load of 25A. I am hoping that this would easily handle a G80, which from looking at the pics seems to take 2 pci-e connectors.
