Performance (40% of the final score) – Mistel has pleased me greatly… they have apparently been paying attention to what we want from a high end power supply, and they gave it to us. Efficiency was Platinum at all times, so there will be no deduction there. Voltage regulation was mythic level, so no deduction there. Power on spike tests revealed no spikes, only relatively smooth and continuous waveforms. No deduction there. Finally, the ripple control. Piece of cake for this unit, all excellent numbers with the worst rail still doing under 20mV. That means this unit gets a now rare 10 from me right here.

Functionality (20% of the final score) – I don’t have too many things to complain about in this section. There was that hardwired Berg connector on the Molex cable and the documentation could stand improving. I’ll take away half a point for each of those, and call it a day. 9.

Value (20% of the final score) – this unit is expected to go on the market in November, so we’re early to the party on this. However, I can tell you the MSRP is $159.99. Remove ten bucks if you want the 550W version, but I don’t see the appeal of doing so for such a small difference in price. While this unfortunately puts it into direct competition with the Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 650W, that is not a fanless unit. No, the actual Seasonic fanless Titanium competition is at $182.19 for 600W. In fact, if this hit the market today it would be NewEgg’s cheapest fanless unit at this power level. And we’ve already seen it has the performance to hang with Seasonic. So… 10.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) – I was very impressed with everything I saw on the insides, and was really hoping to give out another perfect score. Alas, the appalling soldering around the VRM is worthy of a full point deduction, so I can only do a 9 here.

MX650 Fanless – Scoring
Performance 10
Functionality 9
Value 10
Build Quality 9
Total Score 9.6

SUMMARY

It’s always exciting when we see a new product come to the market. It’s even more exciting when that product comes in here and performs like the best units we’re familiar with. That’s what we’ve got here today. The MX650 fanless isn’t a perfect unit, but it’s about as close as we can expect here in 2018 without alien technology helping us out. Mistel should be very, very proud of what they’ve accomplished with this unit. It’s going to be a while before I can get over the fact that not only did this unit perform like the best on the market, but they chose to make it themselves. That’s… incredibly uncommon.

The GOOD:

  • mythic voltage regulation
  • excellent ripple control
  • very good build quality
  • decent cables
  • five year warranty
  • Aura Sync compatible

The BAD:

  • not one thing

The MEDIOCRE:

  • soldering needs improvement in places
