EVGA 850 GQ 850W Power Supply

Few power supply companies have been as active as EVGA has been lately. I’ve almost lost count of how many EVGA units I have reviewed this year alone. Well, it’s time for one more. Meet the brand new GQ series 850W.

New products are hitting the market all the time in the power supply game. As old products reach end of life, or new efficiency levels are breached, it’s only to be expected that companies will try to reinvent themselves multiple times in an effort to try and stay on top of the market. Few companies have gotten to be as active in this process as EVGA. That’s right, folks, we’re looking at yet another brand new line of EVGA units today. They’ve decided to call this series “GQ,” which I can only assume is short for “go quickly.”

I mean, seriously, this is… what? My sixteenth EVGA power supply review this year? I can’t remember any other company releasing so many new power supplies over so short a time span ever before. Antec? No. Corsair? No. Enermax? No. All this speaks to how popular EVGA has grown in the business.

Like all power supplies, there’s some marketing behind this new GQ series. From what I see here, this is intended to be a more budget oriented unit with a five-year warranty; and yet still carrying some of the features of EVGA’s higher end units. We have a semi-fanless mode that can be switched on and off. We have an FDB fan. There’s a full suite of protection circuits, all Japanese capacitors, and a promise of tight voltage regulation.

Of course, we’ll have to see for ourselves on that last one… the 2% number promised on the box isn’t as easy to hit as you might think if you’re used to seeing all these Super Flower and Seasonic units come in here and clear better than 1%. There’s a good reason why I decided on 2% for my “very good” scoring bracket for voltage stability. It used to be nobody but the best could hit that number or do any better. All this “better than excellent stuff” is a relatively recent thing.

If you know me, you also know I don’t like wasting a ton of time on box pictures. Let’s dig into this one so we can get some real work done now.

Not being a top end model, the GQ series looks a little downscaled as far as accessories go. We have some modular cables bundled in velcro cable ties, some screws, a user guide, a power cord, and a power supply.

This is the user guide, covering all the models in the GQ series. I’d call it adequate. It’s not as good as some, but good enough.
