Rosewill CAPSTONE-750 750W Power Supply

Rosewill comes to us today with a new product to look at, the CAPSTONE-750 power supply. This is a 750W unit capable of 80 Plus Gold efficiency, or so they claim. We haven’t tested too many Rosewill products, so I’m eager to get started on this one and see what it can do. Time for some action.

Rosewill CAPSTONE-750 750W

Rosewill isn’t a name too familiar here at the site. As NewEgg’s house brand, most people tend to assume that because Rosewill products are often on the cheaper side, that automatically makes them useless. Well, recently we proved that idea wrong. The Rosewill Lightning 1300W proved to be quite a capable performer.

After that review, Rosewill was interested to see how some of their other products fared here at PSU torture central. They’ve sent me the CAPSTONE 750W to check out, a 750 watt model with 80 Plus Gold certification.

As always, we start off with some boxing. Seriously, about a half-hour ago I got into some fisticuffs with some random guy in Skyrim so I could prove to him I was the better warrior. Thankfully, I won. Then I arrowed everyone in sight and got creamed by the guards. That’s how I was able to get myself out of the game long enough to write this review. Sleep with one eye open, guards. I’ll get you back.

There’s not a lot on the box to get excited about, and most of it is on this side of the box. A list of connectors, load tables for the whole line, and some features:

  • ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92
  • 80PLUS GOLD Certified
  • Full Range Active-PFC
  • Eup Ready
  • Multi-GPU Support – 2/4 x PCI-E 6+2-pin Connector
  • Silent 140mm Fan with Auto Speed Control
  • High Quality Japanese Primary Capacitor
  • Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection and Short Circuit Protection
  • 5-year Warranty – One to One Replacement

Pretty standard stuff, all told. I do have a problem with the warranty though. I don’t want One to One replaced. They lead me down memory lane, give me peace of mind, and put angels in my pocket. There was a time when I would forward my emotions, but I’m telling you straight… love is blind when you’re dealing with hearts and diamonds.

There’s nothing more useful about the box to mention, so I’ll unpack now.

We have a power supply, user guide, power cord, some screws, and a few zip ties.

Rosewill CAPSTONE-750 750W

The user guide is about the most abbreviated thing I’ve seen come with a power supply outside the ones that come with nothing at all, or a photocopied piece of folded paper. It’s a generic guide that spans all four models in five pages.

Let’s have a look at the power supply itself. It’s done up all in a sturdy matte black finish with few other ornamentations. I like it. Nice and simple.

The exhaust grille is very open – it should be no trouble to cool this unit.

A look at the fan and the warranty sticker.

And finally, the unit from another angle showing the label. Usually, I zoom in and show a close-up of the label, but every picture I do is more time away from Skyrim. I know a few people are calling me lazy, and to those people, I say, “Let me guess… someone stole your sweet roll.”

Lots of capacity on the 12V rail of this beast: 744 watts hints that DC-DC voltage regulator modules are employed in this unit for driving the minor rails. Speaking of which, I used to drive the minor rails myself. Then I took an arrow to the knee.

And by that, I mean I used to sit at home in Saskatoon playing Railroad Tycoon all day and screwed up my knee by climbing 6 flights of stairs to get to my apartment while I weighed 320lbs.

This not being a modular unit, all the cabling is fixed in place and not removable. Well, you could remove it with some scissors or wire cutters, but then you’d have to put them back on.

All cabling is well sleeved and tidy. I do feel that starting at 750W we should start seeing a second EPS12V connector, but I won’t make too big a deal over that. At the same time, look at all the units out there now with modularity. It’s gotten to a point now where modularity isn’t the deal-breaker it used to be at the register. This unit is big enough that I really think at least going semi-modular is a worthwhile endeavor.
