Corsair VX550W Power Supply

Today, we’re taking a close look at a brand new offering from Corsair, the VX550. The VX series showed up on the market not too long ago as a more value oriented option than the modular HX line, and was an immediate hit. Will the VX550 live up to the lofty standards set by the rest of Corsair’s lineup? Join me, Oklahoma Wolf and my colleague, madmat, as we toss this puppy on the load tester and see what’s shakin.’

I’ll start off today’s review by showing y’all a nice picture of a box.

Corsair VX550W

This here box arrived on a partly sunny, partly rainy afternoon within the confines of a much bigger box handed to me by the UPS lady. I already knew what was going to be inside, but I will admit to being impressed by the quality of the box for the power supply itself. And it was heavy, too… probably as heavy as most of the Bargain Basement units combined.

The box from above. You might be thinking to yourself, “Wow that’s a narrow box. How much packing material was in there to protect the PSU?” I’ll answer that one in a second. But first, let’s take a moment to ogle the pretty pictures on top of the box, where Corsair has thoughtfully shown us a picture of all connectors present on the unit, and how many of each there are.

Corsair VX550W

Here’s the back of the box for your perusal… it is literally crammed with information about this unit, in no less than three languages (English, Spanish, and French). I’ll just reprint some of the more important bullet points for you here since they’re a little hard to make out in the picture.

  • Ultra-quiet 120mm double ball-bearing thermally controlled fan
  • High efficiency, up to 85% under a wide load range
  • Single +12V rail offers maximum compatibility with latest components
  • High-quality Japanese capacitors
  • Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection
  • 5 Year Corsair Limited Warranty

Also included on the back of the box are several nice charts detailing the unit’s efficiency and noise level curves, as well as a lovely table of the unit’s specs. I’ll just go ahead and reprint that for you here too.

Now that we’ve taken a good look at the box and just about everything it promises us, I’ll go ahead and answer that question about the packaging of the unit itself as I open up the box at last.

Corsair VX550W

Hmm… doesn’t look like there is a whole lot of padding to this one. Just a little white PSU cozy Corsair threw in there. But hold on, there is in fact a layer of bubble wrap in there surrounding the PSU itself. As I opened up this bubble wrap, I was pleased to find that the unit had survived its trip to my house intact. Hooray!

Corsair VX550W

Here we see all that’s included with the VX550: the PSU itself, a power cord, a little plastic bag full of always useful zip ties, the owner’s manual, and the previously mentioned PSU cozy. Why a computer SMPS needed a blanket for the long trip to my house I don’t know, but I must admit it certainly is cool.

And with that, I’m going to turn the review over to madmat for a little bit while I go on a hunting expedition for some caffeine.
