Aerocool Zero-DBA 500W Power Supply

Aerocool calls this power supply “Zero dba” for a reason. A power supply where the fans don’t spin doesn’t create much noise! The Zero dba has a knob on the back that allows you to set at what temperature the fan turns on. The knob can be set to “auto”, “50°C”, “60°C” and “70°C.

Furthermore, the Zero dba features a 135MM fan instead of the more common 120MM fan. A larger fan is capable of moving just as much air, but because it spins at a lower RPM to do so often does not create as much noise.

The back of the box shows us the modular connectors and what plugs in where. There’s also product shots of the cables and a brief description of the fan controller.

Aerocool ZeroDBA 500W Rear Grill

When I was a kid, in the early 80’s, there was a BMX bike called the “Hutch Pro Racer.” The coolest thing about the Pro Racer was the “show chrome” finish (the same company that chromed Hutch frames also chromed motorcycle tailpipes.) You could look at an ordinary chrome bicycle frame and then look at the Hutch’s “show chrome” frame and see a noticeable difference. The show chrome is a mirror finish. Flawless. The finish of the Aerocool Zero dba is similar. I’ve seen shiny, chromed power supplies before. This one is shinier than any other.

Aerocool ZeroDBA 500W Modular Interface

The Aerocool Zero dba has a fixed ATX main connector, an 8-pin modular interface for 4-pin ATX12V or 8-pin EPS12V connectors, two five-pin connectors for SATA cables, four four-pin peripheral Molex connectors, three fan only connectors and one PCI-e connector. Wait a minute… only one PCI-e? That’s not good.

Aerocool ZeroDBA 500W Modular Cables

The cables that come with the Zero dba are very unique. They start with white tubing covering the wires. They then put black sleeves over the white tubing. Insane!

Type of connector:
ATX connector 20+4
2 x 2 12V connectors 1
2 x 3 PCI-e 2*
8-pin Xeon/EPS connector 1**
6-pin Xeon/AUX connector 0
5.25″ Drive connectors 8
3.5″ Drive connectors 2
SATA Drive power connectors 4
Fan only connectors (thermostatically controlled 12V only) 3
* Both PCI-e connectors are on the same cable.
** Two four pin connectors combine to create one 8-pin EPS+12V.

Despite the power supply having one PCI-e modular interface, there are actually two PCI-e connectors included on the same cable. This arrangement isn’t really recommended for high-end SLI or Crossfire cards.

Unfortunately, the combination of tubing and sleeving makes the cables very stiff.

Aerocool ZeroDBA 500W Label

Above we can see that the 500W and 620W version of this power supply uses the same label. But the 620W doesn’t give us any more power on the 12V rail than the 500W we’re testing today!

Although this power supply is “only” a 500W, we find that it has the same 12V capability as other Andyson built power supplies with higher total wattage ratings: The Hiper Type-R 580W and the Sunbeamtech NUUO 550W.
