It's been a little while since XFX entered the power supply market with their excellent 850W Black Edition unit, which I reviewed a little while back. Since then, they've added to their offerings a number of lower powered units that promise all the same performance at a lower wattage and price point. Today's review sample is the 650W XPS unit, XXX edition. Let's see how it fares in comparison to big brother.

In the months since the 80 Plus people decided to add multiple levels to their efficiency certification program, power supply companies have responded by making their offerings more and more efficient to take advantage of the new Bronze, Silver, and Gold categories. One of these companies is Silverstone Technology.

Today, we'll be looking at the brand new Strider Plus platform, an updated and more efficient version of their older Strider series. At one thousand watts, the ST1000-P promises to do everything its older Strider cousins did, only more efficiently.

I'm always on the lookout for bigger and better things to test here at the site, but for my first review of 2010 I decided to go with something a little smaller. Something that people have been asking about in the forums recently. Something from an OEM that has not been looked at all that often by yours truly.

As we head into the final week before Christmas in 2009, a lot of us will be looking for Santa to bring us that new power supply we've always wanted. Today's review sample is the recently released Antec Truepower Quattro 1200 watt, which includes a new feature that goes by the name PowerCache™.

This is my first Antec review sample that has weighed in at a whopping 1200 watts, and I'll admit to having high expectations this time out. Is this a unit we need to be pestering Santa to bring us now that we're coming down to the big day? Let's find out.

Not too long ago, I took my very first look at the Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850W unit and found it wanting. Thermaltake was anxious to improve on things, and so they did; as I found in my last review when I saw what the new and improved 750W Toughpower XT could do.

Once upon a time, Thermaltake sent me a brand new unit called the Toughpower XT. This unit, although priced and targeted as being one of Thermaltake's best, ultimately came up short when it came to performance.
Thermaltake wasn't content to just let things be, however. They went back to the drawing board and now claim to have improved the performance of the Toughpower XT series.
OCZ Z Series 850W

Since 80 Plus began their certification program to help us consumers find the most efficient power supplies out there, power supplies have sought to make the most of the program by making their units more and more efficient. Before too long, 80 Plus added new classification ratings to their program (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) to help distinguish between high efficiency units.

Of the four 80 Plus certification levels, Gold has been the hardest to pull off for power supply companies. Requiring efficiency levels of 87%-90%-87% efficiency between 20% of full power and full power operation, it is a difficult design endeavor indeed. Today OCZ becomes the first 80 Plus Gold unit to be tested at the site. Come on in, and we'll see what a Gold unit can do on the load tester. This should be interesting.

For quite some time now, the power supply market has been nearly dominated by just one name - Corsair. Forum recommendations have gotten to the point where people are sick and tired of hearing that one name recommended over and over, but let's be honest - Corsair has worked hard to get where they are and they deserve their success.

But that doesn't mean that some upstart can't come along and snatch some market share from the current darlings of the power supply world. XFX wants to be that upstart. And to prove it, they've given me their very first unit to look at, the alien looking 850W Black Edition. Should Corsair and the rest of the power supply world be worried?
